Sipech - do you have this thread open permanently to get this? I was just coming to post this.

It is easy to forget how brave the earlier astronauts were. And for Glenn, how much he has continued to serve his country since.

Ha! No. I was just looking at Twitter, checked here to see if anyone had posted and then verified there were multiple news outlets reporting it.

Despite being contemporary with God I'd never heard I believe in Father Christmas until this thread - I watched it on youtube and was wildly impressed. How did I miss that back then?

Or had I just forgotten it?

It doesn't get as much play as it deserves. Those who want a cynical Christmassy song play Fairytale. Those who want traditional drivel play Slade etc. It falls outside the normal fare.

I'd be happy with a bit of Slade etc. (or Fairytale of New York for that matter) - at least it'd offer a nostalgia-fest. The muzak you get in shopping centres and whatnot here coming up to Christmas is mostly ghastly American tat like I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus and hideous, out-of-tune Bing Crosby.

I'm pretty sure that nobody had her on their list, but singer Esma Redzepova has died at the age of 73. I was lucky enough to see her perform live twice, once in Glasgow, and also at the most extraordinary gig in Sibiu, Romania, when I was living there, when her band was Romanian gypsy band Fanfare Ciocarlia. I think I'd go so far as to say it was the best gig I've ever been to, it was wonderful.

She was a fascinating character - a fabulous ambassador for eastern European gypsy music, and she also fostered 47 children. I am so sad that she has died.

E. R. Braithwaite, a Guyanese author, diplomat and former Royal Air Force pilot whose book “To Sir, With Love,” a memoir of teaching in London’s deprived East End, was adapted into a hit 1967 film starring Sidney Poitier, died on Monday in Rockville, Md. He was 104!

(I enjoyed the movie and sought out the book, which I liked even better.)

And...

Alan Thicke, Canadian singer, songwriter and actor best remembered for his portrayal of a father on the television sitcom “Growing Pains,” died on Tuesday. He was 69.

The Freddie Mercury tribute concert being bandied about now as one of George Michael's finest moments is 25 years ago this coming April. [Eek!]

On another note, I'm trylng to remember if the pop culture generation of the 40's was dying off in the 70's like the 80's seems to be doing now. I should start mining my memories for next year's game.
