Many of these "long-term empty" homes are owned by local authorities, housing associations, the Ministry of Defence and landlords who, for one reason or another, would rather leave them empty. The legislation to enable local authorities to buy such properties already exists but they don't seem keen, probably because of the squeeze on finances by central government which is happy to spend many times more on "Help to buy" schemes which do little more than inflating house prices.

If some of them are already owned by local authorities or housing associations then surely that's the place to start - no need to buy them if you already own them!
Local authorities own comparatively few homes, occupied or empty. Even when they do, they need funds to repair or redecorate them, and they are denied the funds by the same central government that pumps hundreds of millions into "Help to Buy" which only helps their friends in the housebuilding sector.

Most social housing isn't council owned now anyway, it's owned and run by housing associations which are very variable.

It's the ones with too much money that are. Maybe we should think about stopping them from buying up the available housing stock, then leaving it empty?

But they aren't immigrants. Oh no, they are investors.

I think our beloved government have long since crossed the point at which incompetence becomes culpable.
I don't think they're incompetent. They are proving to be quite adept at doing things that matter to them - mostly looking out for the interests of their friends in the City - and any criticism, however well-deserved, just seems to slide off (with the assistance of the Daily Heil). Can you imagine the furore there would have been if a Labour government had presided over the latest NHS scandals?

Well, I mean incompetent with regards to this specific issue. If they were competent and xenophobic, they wouldn't allow numbers like 3,000 children or 20,000 vulnerable Syrians to be bandied round in the first place. As it is, they look like a soft touch to the Ukippers and bastards to the left.

And I think the reason why criticism slides off them is not because they have good media management, but because there is no effective Opposition to provide an alternative.

Anger notwithstanding, doesn't "Conservative Member of Parliament" do just fine?

Still, she is now trying to wriggle out of the shitpit she has thrown herself in and I'm not sure if she is digging herself deeper in rather than extricating herself. In any event her bare statement will be lauded and welcomed by far too many people in May's New Mean Britain.

True, on a different subject we also have Philip Davies also in the running for the position of Bastard of the Year. Though it's a very large field with lots of Conservative MPs in the running.

I wonder what he is for? What possible reason is there to be against protection for victims? He must really like the sound of his own voice.

This quote from Charles Dickens' 'Christmas Carol' came to mind.

"Man," said the Ghost, "if man you be in heart, not adamant, forbear that wicked cant until you have discovered What the surplus is, and Where it is. Will you decide what men shall live, what men shall die? It may be, that in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man's child. Oh God! to hear the Insect on the leaf pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust."

Dickens could be overblown sometimes in his writing. But sometimes he got it just right.
