The potential new cat is aprox. five years old, he's a rescue from a home that took him in in October, then decided they didn't want him because he scratched a three year old. They were going to take him to a kill shelter, or just abandon him if there was no room there. A rescue organization heard about it and took him, and that's where he is now, in temporary foster care. I have to fill out an application, pay a fee, and I think have a home visit before they let me have him. I can't take him before the first of the year but they said that's OK. His name is Oreo.

When I took Georgie-Porgy to the vet for her blood test I asked for her to be weighed. Although the tests came back as normal for her hyperthyroid condition (which means the medication is working), she is still losing weight. This could be for a number of reasons, but the vet suggests switching her food and weighing in a month's time.
When she jumped into bed this morning I realised how frail her body is, although she still gallops around the section, and occasionally clouts the black cat who is often skulking about.
I am enjoying her while I have her, but I suspect it won't be for many more months

Oh, Huia. Georgie-Porgy
I have a new cat. She's an 8-month-old dilute tortie. I'm not yet sure what her name is going to be. At the moment, she's unhappy (because she's locked in the downstairs bathroom) and Aida is unhappy (because she is not yet convinced that it will be Enormously Cool to be the Senior Cat). Pray for us!

What is a dilute torti? Patchy, who was the senior cat when Georgie walked in the door and staked her claim, was a tortie, and she was very vocal. Visitors often suggested she needed to go to the vet, but she lived a long and happy life. Georgie watched me bury her and plant a rosemary bush - for remembrance.
I hope your cat is as happy Rossweisse, albeit quieter.
I hope all goes smoothly with your new adoption too Nicole.

Dear pet insurance company.
If you need more info from the rescue home before you can process my claim, and you phone them but the number doesn't work...
... er, there are these things called 'search engines' you could use to find the right number. Just a suggestion. You know, instead of leaving things alone and hoping the information will be dropped off by Santa.

And now she has a name: She is Béatrice, from Berlioz's "Béatrice et Bénedict." It's a fun mezzo role with tortie-like attitude. I think it should work.

I never knew there was such a thing as a dilute tortie. Now I know how to describe Guest Cat (he was mostly grey, but there were hints of the orange stripes).
And now of course, I have a very soft spot for dilute torties!

I wish I wasn't allergic to cats (or, more accurately, cats' fur).
One of my neighbours is employed by a most beautiful cat. He (the cat) is mostly white, with patches of light orange, and is named Oedipus.
He sometimes summons me to pet him and/or feed him when his human (neighbour P.) is off-duty i.e. at proper work, but I daren't oblige, or I would be rendered helpless by sneezing, and puffy eyes (to the extent that I would not be able to see).

I think Sphinx cats are adorable! When I petted one at the pet store, she felt like warm velveteen!
I love, love, love cats. I am horribly allergic to them, however. (Don't tell my allergy doc that I'm keeping my grand kitties for a few days right now!) When things in my life settle down, I will think seriously about being adopted by a Sphinx.

I've just spoken to the vet about integrating Beatrice (the New Cat) with Aida (the Already Resident Cat). She was concerned to hear that Aida is still growling and hissing at Beatrice when they meet in the controlled environment of one of them in the carrier and the other outside.
I don't want to lose Beatrice, who is darling little girl, but I can't have eternal warfare, either. Prayers for acceptance (I don't ask for them to be buddies) and peace would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

There are chemical assistants one can call in. Do they have Feliway where you are? A kitty calmer; you can drop it onto their necks or use an aerosol dispenser.

Feliway dispensers have never seemed to help much in the past. (And they're expensive!)
But so far it seems to be going fairly smoothly: There were some hisses and baleful stalking on the part of Aida to start - but Beatrice has been exploring, and is now curled up on my lap.
We shall see how the day progresses, but I think perhaps the vet and I were unnecessarily alarmed (I hope).
Thank you!

Excellent news, Nicole!
I can sort of understand the thing about taking leave when your pet is ill, although I suspect that (as with the recent thing about non-smokers objecting to smokers getting smoke-breaks) it may well cause dissention.
I imagine that most veterinary surgeries are open beyond usual office hours, so the "I can't get there" excuse may not hold water.

Georgie-Porgy, who seemed to be getting a bit frail, now appears a have a new lease on life. I went out to hang up the washing, and she was on the roof of the house. I went inside for a while and when I next went out she was looking down at me from the garage which is a separate building. I think she was showing off in front of the much younger cat from along the road who was visiting
