I attempted to post a response on the "women's right/abortion" thread and got hung up for several minutes with a sort of partial completion message. I was attempting to log in at the same time.
So I backed out, and attempted to log in first, which took two tries. Then the "Post a reply" box came up, so I copy/pasted my response and sent it in.
So it appears twice. This has happened a few times before.
Is this a problem with log-in combined with message, is it an overload of the input program or is it just one of those things?
And, would a host care to eliminate the second post, or does it matter?

Is there any way I can make adjustments to my public name? Whilst I can live with the fact that I have spelt it in the plural form, it has been brought to my attention that it is grammatically wrong and it is beginning to niggle. All I want to do it remove the offending 'y' (the title should be 'Darllenwr') ~ how can I do that? (Can I do that?)
Or could some kindly Admin do it for me?

No, not this instant.
Sometimes Erin allows name-change amnesty for a day, and reactivates the ability. She often gives some warning about when it might be.

A quirk of the software means that Chorister's profile is nasty to her (this also applies to other members, particularly those with 9 letter names), see here for proof. Know not if anything can be done.

You beasts It's a conspiracy I tell you.
Although it doesn't show that on my profile - are you using an unusually narrow screen or an unusually large font?
My screen says:

I've not been around here for a bit and thought I'd do a search to see if any of my favourite things had been discussed recently (or ever...) Problem is that the search function found a number of threads, supposedly current(ish) but when I clicked on the thread to read it I was then told "This thread no longer exists" - or words to that effect. I'm just guessing here - but I'd think that the search function actually searches and returns something it genuinely finds - given that's normal for a search function.
So, why then, can't I then access what it finds It's VERY frustrating ![[Mad]](angryfire.gif)

Because every so often, we have to go into the secret admin area and 'rebuild stats' or something like that. This reindexes the whole thing so that everything is where the search function thinks it is (as opposed to having been moved, closed, had its number changed due to other threads having been moved or closed etc...). The downside of doing this, is that it shuts the boards down whilst it's happening. And then people complain.
It's a fine balance - complain because the threads are inaccessible by the admittedly eccentric search facility, or complain because the boards are down when you want to do a bit of surfing in your tea break!
This is brought to you from an admin who doesn't understand what's going on back there, just which buttons to press!

Moi? Complain? Heaven forfend!
But, as I understand the gist of your reply, it's "give it a while, let the reindexing finish and all will be tickety-boo".
I look forward to it.

OK - I waited 24 hours (in which time even the slowest database ought to be able to re-index itself) but I'm still getting "You have requested a thread that does not exist!" when I click on the thread names that my search brings up. Because some of these threads are 'old' e.g. have dates in 2008 / 2007 I wondered if they might have been archived or moved.
What perplexes me is that, in order to give me an answer, it's likely that a search is actually being carried out and returning a correct thread - which is what I'd expect. I really wouldn't expect a complete index of all words in all postings to be continually refreshed (which would be a really OTT function).
So, if the search is finding the posts there's a very good chance that they are there. What seems to be missing is the ability to click through on the results to find them.
For example, I searched Heaven for 'benny hinn'. I got one result: "Nutty Bishops! (Reputedly)" dated 29 December, 2008. That's not a long time ago but it is before the currently first available posting which is dated 01 February 2009. Clicking on "Nutty Bishops! (Reputedly)" produced the error message.
A manual check of Dead Horses, Limbo, Oblivion... also turns up nothing, which inspires me to believe that the thread(s) I'm looking for are supposed to have been consigned somewhere - but haven't been. In turn, that will mean that you've got a database that's going to grow - and grow

Perhaps this wasn't made clear: the re-indexing is initiated manually, and then not often due to the associated boards down-time.

my emboldening.
The thing Phil the Bear might have missed is that this is an international board, and time differences being what they are, somewhere in the world, it's always someone's tea break. (Before Phil the Bear comes back and suggests doing this overnight - whose overnight would you plan on using?)

Mine (obviously)
But, to be honest, I'm still at a loss. Even if re-indexing is started manually the fact remains that over 24 hours after trying a search I still wasn't getting back the right answer. In fact - I've just tried again - and still no luck. I cannot believe that it takes that long to re-index. (I once investigated a database that had a similar problem but it did have 7 years worth of data and some 500,000 items added per month. That only took about 6 hours to straighten out and it had a ridiculously high number of keys.)
What is obvious is that the thread I'm looking for isn't in the 'current' section of the forum - but it doesn't seem to be anywhere else either.

And therefore the powers-that-be don't do it on a very frequent basis. They don't want to hear us yammer more than we already do. Which seems reasonable to me.
In short, for the search feature to work as you want it to, you'll have to wait until after the next time the boards are shut down.

...because in that particular 24 hour period, nobody with access to the Re-Index Button felt compelled to push it. Still haven't, I'm willing to bet - due to the lack of posts saying OH MY GOD THE SHIP WAS DOWN!

Forgive me, I pray, for trying to get this right but as an IT professional with some 40 years experience I'm completely bemused by the answers.
One step at a time. A post is made in a thread. It is indexed. A search will find it. (Simple)
At some point that thread is closed. (No problem - doesn't affect the posts or the indices).
At some other later point that thread is then moved from its original section of the forum to another (e.g.Heaven to Oblivion). And it's at this point that in most databases that the 'old' thread and its original indices get dropped and the 'new' thread gets inserted into the database. This latter operation should, automatically, cause a new index to be created.
Re-indexing, generally, is only required when a database's indexing gets very convoluted. Normally the index is destroyed and a whole new one is created. And, yes, that would normally require the shutting down of the database. (Although newer databases allow for reindexing without shutting down).
What's confusing me is that there seems to be some kind of hybrid activity going on where the original posts have been removed from one area and put into another without affecting the existing indices. The only databases I've ever met that do something like that ceased to exist about 20 years ago. Surely the technology here is a little more advanced?

According to the UBB.Classic™ Administrator's Guide (PDF link) quote: UBB.classic™ uses a series of files ("metadata" files) to store frequently requested data about members and topics within a forum. From time to time, the information stored in these files may drift out of sync, resulting in occasional errors.
AIUI the moving of threads generally and/or when Oblivion was created has generated/does generate such a drift. The remedy apparently is quote: To rebuild the metadata files, click Rebuild & Reindex... This same mechanism can be used to rebuild the search index ...
I guess that is why some things now simply don't show up in when the search function is used, and will not do so until the board's next temporary suspension. UBB.Classic™ 6.5.0 is 6 years old now and, I guess, may owe quite a bit to older data handling practices/capabilities.

I posted a reply on Belle Ringer's "Last Straw" thread. I'd glanced away while the two-step occurred, and when I looked back, my "New reply" window was still open. I thought that maybe I'd missed the button, and clicked again, but all I got was the flood control notice.
I found that my post had arrived safe and sound anyway, once I clicked on the thread ID in the "headline".
Is this a problem in my machine or is there a communication error somewhere? I've had several instances of very slow loading in the last few days. (Yes, I'm running IE8)

Adding a post to say that the same sort of thing happened again, on the "facial hair" thread, except this time, I got a double-post.
Is there some sort of communication error, or is it something I have to fix?

The boards have slowed down in the past few minutes and that's when double posting happens. If everything is running slow, I leave it and double check the thread (by opening another window to look) before clicking again to see if the post has gone through. If you get a flood control message you've undoubtedly posted it once.
Maybe there's maintenance going on somewhere to slow things down?

If there is a thread allowing random web links in the Circus (and I shudder at the thought, and refuse to look on principle), then simply paste the website URL there. Because the website is not IN the email you received; it's on the web. What you got was merely the web address that you could then browse (with your web browser). No forwarding involved.

When I came back to the Boards, my reply was posted, but I was not logged in.

Question about the UBB code on the ship. There exists more code than seems to be allowed here. In specific, there is code for hiding text unless one highlights it.
TEXT
This would be wonderful for, well, spoilers. Too many folk here put the spoiler alert much too close the the spoiler itself. Not sure about anyone else, but my brain often processes both the alert and the spoiler at the same time. Can this be enabled in some way on the ship? [ 04. Sorry about not providing a more timely response. I did a trawl through the control panel looking for available options for the UBB code with the board software - and came up empty-handed. All we can do is turn off images (which we have) or disable HTML (which we also have done). Later versions of UBB code do not seem to be available for a mere Admin to roll out for general Ship use.
