I added a contribution to a thread at two minutes past nine (BST). When it came up after the "wait while" message had cleared the time indication on it showed as two minutes past midnight tomorrow morning. Seeing a hideous typo I edited it - after which the editing note under the text showed the editing time as two minutes past eight.

Why the discrepancy ? Even if the bridge of the ship uses a time zone of its own, surely it should be consistent?

I can't remember which way round it is (because I'm on Ship time mostly) but the Ship is in one time zone which I *think* is what shows in the edited messages, and you've set yourself a time in your profile, which shows the other time

I amtrying to search for "suicide" in Oblivion, but

a) the Ship search function does not admit that anything is in Oblivion (or anywhere else)

b) I seem to have forgotten how to ask Google to do it for me

c) the threads that used to have that latter clue are nowhere to be found (and I can't search for them because of b).

How do I write a search request in Google for the forums?

Try Googling "Ship of Fools" and whatever clues you have. There are lots of possibilities when you use that and the word "suicide". You can also type in the word "Oblivion".

I clicked on a link ('dogma free' in a post of Yorick's near the end of the 'What should Christians tell their children?' thread) and it went to a page with a cartoon. I then clicked on the back arrow to go to the previous page, but couldn't (so closed that page and started again!), but I would be grateful if someone could tell me why this happened, please.

Probably because the link you selected actually passed you through to another page which then redirected you to the one you wanted. So going "back" returned you to the one that sent you away in the first place, IYSWIM.

An irritating way of coding web pages, beloved of spammers, pornographers, and online advertisers in general. Though Wikipedia does it on their mobile site [Frown]

Partly because of this, I nearly always open links in a different tab. There are different ways to do that depending on what browser I am using but in most of them on Windows you do it by right-clicking rather than left-clicking the link & selecting something like "open link in background tab" from a drop-down menu. (It certainly works like that in Firefox, Chrome, and Opera - I just checked) On my Mac I do it by holding down the splat key when I click the link, which works in both Safari and Firefox.

Though the main reason I do tab browsing like that is probably that I get bored waiting for a web page to open so when I go to a link I open it in a background tab and carry on reading the one I'm already on.

Though that gets scuppered by irritating sites that pop up questions or warnings when you open a page or, even worse, close one. Yes I mean you, google mail. Yuck. Another evil spammer's trick. No respectable website should sink so low as to try it on.

Yes, and I do currently have 31 tabs open in 7 windows in 3 browsers - I just counted!

Because when you click on a link it opens a new window. As it's a new window, there's nothing to go back to, so the back button won't work.

Thank you for your answer. Would this passing through have been so fast that it was invisible to me?

Does that mean that if I'd clicked twice - very quickly?! - I'd have gone back to SoF?

I have learnt how to do new tabs, but I'm far less likely to close one accidentally if I use a new page each time ... and I think my maximum number ever is about 4!!

Could be, yes. Though if you watch the address bar carefully, sometimes you might see the flicker of the in-between address.

Possibly. A more reliable method is to use your browser history to go back to the specific page you're interested in.

I don't know if it would affect your Private Messages, but I notice that you're an Apprentice with one post to go before becoming a Shipmate. I don't think you can join a private board until you're a Shipmate.

During the past few days I have had to Log In, although I am sure I haven't logged out. This is not a problem, but I am usually permanently logged in, and would much appreciate help and advice on how to get back to this.
Firenze (on he 'pedia' thread in Heaven) suggests checking cookies, but I'll have to get help on that I think.

What web browser are you using? Generic instructions for Firefox click Tools, then Options, then click the privacy tab to see if cookies are being deleted after the session or if it's set to keep cookies.

In IE click on the widget icon towards the right top of the page, then click on Internet Option, click on the privacy tab and again check your cookie settings.

I don't use Chrome (gasp, I know) so can't much there.

Okay, a weird one that has happened several times in the past couple days.

I was on page 3 of the today's thread list, which ended with July 9 posts. Flipped to the 4th page and suddenly we were on July 4 posts, as if nobody had ever posted to the Ship between the two dates at all. Knew that couldn't be right, so flipped back to three, clicked on four again, and this time it came right (dates July 9 and 8).

Got into an interesting looking thread on page 5 (the diabetes one), because the last post shown on the todays' thread list referenced my name (and was dated July 8). It brought me to the correct thread, but the final post was again several days ago, and NOT the correct final post. I think it was July 4 or 5 this time. Clicked back, tried again, this time I got the right one.

What the heck is going on?

Undoubtedly more indexing leaks in our creaky old Ship. Hopefully this particular error will be written-over with a new parsing. If it persists, flag it up and we'll try an actual re-index.

I have just noticed something odd in a post - On the 'East midlands meet 14 July' thread in All Saints, Tom Day's post of 15 July has a quote in it that includes a web address that I didn't put in my original post. How has that got added into a quote?

Is the Ship's search function even more broken than usual? Searching Oblivion for "God" returns nothing - which may be true theologically, but not bibliographically.

I'm actually trying to locate the "my first smartphone" thread, formerly in Heaven. A Certain Well-known Search Engine tells me it's still in there, but I suspect it's been Obliterated recently, and the WKSE hasn't/can't/won't access Oblivion.

Any sightings, please?

You can't search Oblivion using the Ship search function. Google often does a better job of searching Oblivion - but you use this string with what you are looking for site:forum.ship-of-fools.com

Thanks all - I knew there were problems and so I did use Google with the "site:" function, but as Rook said in the linked thread:

Tried posting on the Election thread in Purg.

Having "sent" it, my little activity whirly kept on going forever, and nothing else changed on my screen while I played two games of Solitaire.

So I cut the comment, returned to the thread, opened the "Post reply" page again, reposted the comment, and sent it. Almost instantly, I got the appropriate reponse and discovered I had two copies of my comment. Is there something on my machine that is holding up the interaction?

I'm finding I get hung up or flood control messages occasionally and if I keep clicking, I end up with two messages. If it happens now I open the Ship in another window to check if the post has gone through before reposting.

A while ago, when I was on 'my posts' page, I must have accidentally clicked on something which has made the space 1.1/2. A friend checked this by referring to old pages which are single spaced. Now, although I realise this is probably not a problem, I just wondered how I - or someone else! - can change this back to single spacing.

Hi there,

I wanted to change the readable text in my signature (which linked to my blog) and somehow messed it all up so I deleted the ubb text to start again, only to realise I'd forgotten what to do. Can someone please tell me what to type into my signature box so that I get a link to my blog with covering text (e.g. "my blog"). Thank you [Hot and Hormonal]

Are you sure you're clicking the edit post icon (the one like a bit of paper), not the "reply with quotes" which is next to it? Because the reply with quotes should generate a second post and flood control warning, whereas the edit post should do neither.

I just had a very weird thing happen when I posted on "fall" in the Circus. Instead of going to my post after entering it, the screen went to the top of the page. When I scrolled to the bottom to see my post, it wasn't there, but going back to the front page of the Circus, it says I made the last post.

Does this make any sense?

ETA, I just checked my posts, and it lists this post and the previous one in "fall", which isn't there. [Confused]

jedijudy, that happened to me last week (I think), also in the "fall" thread. I posted at the same time as someone else -- when it went back to the thread, my post didn't show but the other person's did. So I tried to delete my post (since it no longer made sense). Since it didn't show, I couldn't delete it (but it showed in my history). By the time it showed up it was of course too late to delete it.

I've just downloaded Firefox onto my new mac. The 'jump to new posts" option at the top of each thread has disappeared. Does anyone know how I can get it back?

If I log on to the ship using Safari the option is there.

Read a few threads, then close Firefox and reopen it. The option will have returned.

It decides which posts are old and which are new based on your browser history, and as far as your new browser is concerned they're all new right now.

Marvin, thanks for the advice, but it hasn't worked. None of the threads I've read show the 'jump to new posts' link.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I assume it's caused by a browser setting. Could it be caused by having the "no tracking" option enabled?

I'm still stuck without the "jump to new posts" link. Firefox shows me which threads I've visited, and it shows me which pages of long threads I've visited, but "jump to new posts" has completely disappeared.

I've now tried with and without every browser option I'm aware of, but I'm not very technical and may have missed something, so if anyone here can suggest anything else I could try I'd appreciate it.

If you fire up a new browser, it has no history cookies for what you've "read". So as far as it understands, there's no jumping required to get to nominally new posts.

Likewise, if the browser you normally use has tracking disabled then it too will not permit any cookies to keep track of what might be new to you.

In order to have the "jump to new posts" function work, you need to allow cookies, and you need to leave them unpurged for a while. And, obviously, visit threads such that when you later return to them there can be comparatively new posts to jump to.

Or, that's my theory. I never use the stupid function, because I use too many different computers for it to ever be meaningful.
