You could try clicking that "JavaTester" link in my last post on this thread. That will give you a better idea of exactly what Java version your browser has decided to use.

Thank you. I'm sorry this is so painful
I followed that advice, and it only has an option for "Version 2 v.1.4.2 for applet" despite me downloading (apparently successfully) version 1.3.1. And I couldn't see an "Enable Java Console" tab anywhere. [ 01. March 2004, 18:16: Message edited by: Jack the Lass ]

make sure you have closed down all instances of your browser...
Then open up control panel via the start menu. The versions of Java should then be listed in there. By double clicking on them and then selecting the browser tab you can turn that version on or off in your web browser.

Is anyone else having trouble getting into the cafe? I haven't had probs before, and for some reason can't get in on either of my computers.
I've cleared the cache etc, but nothing.
Has something changed in the last few days?

Well, I've only just been able to get back onto the Ship at all after about an hour. May be related.

The email notifications will tell you who they're from, when they were sent and what they said. So, though I've no idea why they aren't in your profile, you at least have all the important stuff.

I think it's about time to ask that question again.
I'm still getting the same error at home -- the server won't even give me the applet. And now I learn that my browser at work won't work with a Java version below 1.4.x. (It's Mozilla Firefox -- but all Mozilla derivatives have the same requirement.) [Don't suggest IE -- it's not available for Linux.]
The server slipped up once a few months ago and let me in on my home machine, but otherwise I've been locked out there for about 6 months.
<whine whine>
So -- what are the chances for an upgrade to the cafe?

I wasn't too impressed when I saw that requirement in Firefox myself. Are you using KDE on your Linux machine? If you are, you may be able to persuade Konqueror (KDE's own browser and file manager) to open the cafe. Works for me.

I've never used KDE -- but I just installed enough of it to run Konq -- and I got into the cafe!!!
Now all I have to do is persuade my boss to let me spend all day at work chatting in the cafe.
Thanks, Paul. Now I'll try to figure out what's going on at home.

Could I ask what "flood control" is? Two or three times I've attempted to post but got a message re "flood control", with advice to wait 90 seconds and not use the back button. Each time (adventuress that I am), I've used the back button without waiting 90 seconds and was then able to post successfully.

The Ship's software is set to prevent apprentices and shipmates from posting within 90 seconds of their last post; the feature is called "flood control." The purpose of flood control is to prevent automated spamming of the boards.

"The plant returns" thread. Started by Nightlamp. Why, when I click on it, is the first post by Fish Fish.? And why does it say "Page 0"?
I was reading this thread earlier and the first post was definitely by Nightlamp, and there was a lot by Karl LB. Where's it gone?

I can't find anything either called executable installer or setup.exe.
Neither have I managed to find a netscape version 4 (Alan's link didn't work).
And in my control panel I seem to have 2 versions of Java 1.4 but none registered of 1.3.1.
Never mind...

I'm still having problems since my password was changed. I keep logging on, only to be told I haven't logged on. And yet it seems I can still post! It also means I don't have access to my profile or the directory, as that isn't an option when you're not logged on (even though I have!).
Can someone help to sort me out?

Is there anything in the zip file that ends in .exe? And is there a Readme.txt - this might have some useful info in it.

You need to delete your cookies, close your browser and then open it again and log in to the ship with your new password. That should solve your problem.
You have 4 cookies form the ship all set by forum.ship-of-fools.com and you can get rid of them in Internet Explorer using the Tools menu then Internet Options then delete cookies. In Mozilla this option is listed under Tools then Options then Privacy. I forget where to find your cookies in Netscape, but it is probably similar.
Hope that helps,
'frin

My email has been very slow lately (this is presumably because of the impending changes at Christian Aid's Surefish system) - but it is not amusing when emails take four or five DAYS to arrive. Now I have started getting a small window popping up, headed Enter Network Password. It then says Please type your user name and password. The fields are:
Server: pop3.fish.co.uk User name:[my email address, already filled in] Password: [a row of asterisks, presumably my password]
Options given are OK and Cancel
So far I have just clicked on X - but now it has come up six times in the past half hour. Any thoughts as to whether this is genuine, and I should select OK? I have AVG antivirus running...

This makes it appear that no-one has posted on any boards in the day since I last connected (which I usually spot).
Normally it does refresh if I click on a thread. But occasionally even the thread seems to get filled in from offline memory. This can cause embarrassing cross-posts.
Clicking refresh every so often seems to jump-start it all.
But does anyone share this difficulty, and have any long-term solution to prevent my occasional embarrassment?
Moved from another thread.
It sounds like you need to change your browser settings as it's taking pages from your cache rather than from the Internet.
Select Tools > Internet Options > Settings > And then change the setting to always check for a new page
Hope this works

OK,I'm having a weird problem. I can't get into the main Heaven page from my home computer. It keeps coming back as "page not found". I can get into every other board, I can get into individual Heaven threads, but I can't get into the main page. This has been going on for awhile, at first I thought it was actually a problem the Ship was having, but at this point it's obviously not. Any ideas, anyone? One thing I did try that didn't work was what someone suggested for another problem a few posts above, changing the setting on checking for new versions of pages.
Thanks.

I use a bookmark to get to the main page of the Ship, then click on the link to the boards main page.
And no, that link just came back page not found.

Unfortunately, that was the only real idea I had. That link, and the one on the boards home page are correct and are working. It must be a local problem of some sort on your end. What happens if you try a different browser?
