here I am trying to learn how to use this stuff. Mainly the 'quote' thing because Eliab has had a (justified!) go at me. Help will probably be needed....

Look along the top of the post where you've got the details of the date and time it was posted. Along the same line is a series of icons. The one on the far right (the quotation marks) is the one you want

What I do is right click on the "reply with quote" icon to open the second quote into another tab or window. Then I "reply with quote" as usual to the first one and then copy the second quote (with all the UBB formatting) from the other tab/window.

I need to learn how to insert a link into my text, but without just copying the link's url (which appears not to be accepted practice--(why not??).
I see that people do something like write "the article can be found here" and when you click on the bold "here" you link to the article. But how to set it up like that?
Can some kind person tell me where to find instructions?

Partly it's because the bare URL can look untidy. More importantly, if the URL is very long it can mess up the page formatting - especially if your post gets quoted.

The easiest way is to use the URL instant UBB code button, just below the reply window next to all the smilies. Click this, paste the URL into the first pop-up and then put whatever text you want into the second pop-up. You'll get something that looks like:

This antique version of the UBB software doesn't support superscripts. Sorry.
You can get some things in superscript, but only if there's a special code for them, ² for example.
One list of special characters if anyone's interested.

@lapsed heathen - partly it's got characters in that this BB text won't support - so you have to go find a tinyurl or ow.ly link instead, and partly you've got a space between the = sign and http:
