On a previous enquiry I got the principle of using the "" thing to quote a Shipmate's post complete; but I could still do with knowing

Is it possible, having used the "" to quote the whole post, to insert my comments within that quoted post so that my comments appear as distinct comments? I've worked out how to approximate this by a complex series of selecting bits and copying and pasting, but this often doesn't seem to easily preserve the original UBB.

What is possible in this line easily? And in explaining, please bear in mind that though I am 'Aspergic', I didn't get the computer genius version of AS....

There are a number of ways to quote another poster.

At the code level, their words need to appear between the quote tags, as below without the spaces:

[ quote ] (what the person said) [ /quote ]

You can achieve this as follows:

i) "hard-code" the answer by typing the codes in manually.

ii) Press the "quote" button below the words "instant UBB code" underneath the text box that appears when you click to post a reply. This gives you a pair of tags as above, between which you must place the text you wish to quote.

iii) Clicking on the "quotation marks" at the top right of a post will place that entire post inside the "quote" tags, and also add who it's by. It will also bold the text by using the [ qb ] and [ /qb ] tags.

To address several posters' comments in one post, what I usually do is open a window to compose my final reply, then open another window by pressing on the "quotation marks" icon to have that person's coments appropriately encoded (abridging them as necessary) - and paste the result into my first window, adding my comments underneath as I go. Then repeat as often as necessary for as many posters as you're quoting.

Another alternative is to compose your entire answer in Word, hard-coding as you go, and copy-paste the entire result into the "post a reply" box.

Whichever of these options you use, using "preview post" will show you whether there are any mistakes.

Please note (and this applies to everybody) that while learning UBB code takes a little time, it makes posts much more legibile and is to be preferred to any use of inverted commas and such like.

In addition to the advice on composing a post quoting several people, my method to do this is to use the "" to quote the whole post. At the point(s) where I want to insert my own comment I type in the code to close the quote ([ /qb ][ /quote ]), add a couple of blank lines then reopen the quote for the next section ([ qb][ quote ]). Then go back and type my comment within the blank lines. When I've finished, I then use preview post to ensure it's right.
