Okay, it's not UBB practice, but can anyone tell me how to save a thread before it gets deleted/limboed? Ta muchly.

Well, if it gets limboed you don't really need to save it as we'll keep hold of it
To save a thread (especially a long one) the easiest way seems to be to open the "printer friendly view" (icon at bottom left of the thread) which generates a file without all the avatars and sigs. You can then save that using the "File->Save As..." menu option. Or, you can copy the whole thing into a text editor and save it there.

Not sure about how easy to follow the instructions will be ...
First, you need the address for the post you want to link to. You'll see a small icon like a piece of paper at the top left of each post (just left of the "Posted date/time" text). If you right click on that you'll get an option like "Copy shortcut", do that.
Next, to put that in your post. Click the "URL" button on the list of Instant UBB codes below the reply window. Paste the URL you've copied into the first popup window (ctrl-V, or right click in the window and select paste) - make sure you only have one "http://", the window includes one already. Then put some text in the second popup (eg: "this post"), and you'll have your link.

& trade; - just without the space.
