On the Ozblog thread on All Saints, Pete C suggests:
“The discussion of the new Australian Prime minister would make a nice addition to Purgatory, don't you think? My eyes bleed at some of the discussion there, and I would enjoy reading about it.”
So here goes.
The newly installed Prime Minister of Australia (Julia Gillard) is not only the first female PM in Australian history, but also an unmarried atheist with a [male] hairdresser for a partner. Does any of this matter in today’s world?
Certainly all these characteristics make a great contrast with the Leader of the Opposition (Tony Abbott) , a male former seminarian nicknamed “The Mad Monk”. Abbott, though still a conservative catholic strongly opposed to abortion, is now married with 3 children, with a reputation for spending more time training for triathlons than working on policy.
