Can someone please explain to a bear of little brain how to do whatever it is so that the URL isn't too long, thus avoid incurring extra work for the hosts. They are already busy enough.
Please keep it simple.
Thanks,
Huia

Yes. First copy the URL into your computer's memory - you can do this by right-clicking on it in the toolbar at the top of the page and selecting "copy".
Then click on the little button marked URL at the bottom of the SoF "Reply" page. This will give you a text box (with the letters http: already highlighted). Paste the URC you've copied into this box - be careful that you don't duplicate the http: bit, you may need to delete that.
After OKing that, you get another box, in which you can write whatever you want to describe what you've just pasted: for instance it might be "this page" or "here" or whatever. Then OK it. You've finished, so go on writing your message as normal and post it.
And then, when your message comes up on screen, the URL won't be there, the words you typed will be there (in colour) - if you click on them you should, as if by magic, be taken to the website you chose.

Baptist Trainfan Thanks, I get that bit, but there is something else you do when it's a long URL, which breaks the scroll lock or otherwise causes havoc to the code and a host had to fix it.
That's waht I want to be able to do successfully. Sorry I wasn't very clear in making my request.

Huia, I haven't yet come across this problem on this site, but a way around it would be to get a shorter version of the weblink, from Tiny URL.

Get it right the first time, that's the main thing. Whoa. Can't afford to let it pass
Get it right the next time, that's not the same thing. Whoa. Gonna make a first time last.
