I realise that would probably be far too impractical to actually do, but I do think it would be an awesome feature.
It's worth having a discussion about this after we put the new site up. MW doesn't currently collect the full address of the church visited, so it may not be possible to correctly turn the church name and vague place-name into the latitude/longitude required to put it on a map.
Not a priority item, but it should be possible (if space is built into the entries as the port over) to add the geo-spacial data to old entries, the nice folks at google have already collected many of them. It would just take a little time...

Yes, it should be possible in many cases. I just can't promise it for all of them. Or it may get some wrong. But, if we have time, we can try!

After some research re currency conversion via credit card or via the payment site, donated.
For those whose currency isn't in £, my experience is that the conversion can be done via a credit card company's conversion rate or via the PayPal conversion rate. It is worth doing a wee of research to determine what rate is better. I saved about 8% by doing this. Which seemed like a crazy amount of difference.

When I did it, I did not see where I could choose to have the Paypal conversion rate. But perhaps that is because I do not have a Paypal account--I just used it to process it as a credit card payment. I can understand that they might only offer the Paypal conversion to actual Paypal members.
I am braced for a ludicrous conversion rate. It's not my first rodeo with foreign currency.

The limitations of the current software are a source of frustration. However, the same has created a minimalist feel that, IMO, fosters the sense of community and facilitates communication by features not being a distraction. Vanilla offers feature that could significantly change this. Also I would assume that, because of the current policy against like buttons, features like Best of Best Answers and (shudder) Gamification would be firmly in the off position. Am I correct? And fucken'ell, no "Social" logins. And Trusted Users are the hosts? All very much PrettyPlease sirs and madams, rather than demands of course.

Rest assured, we're adopting stable software that introduces functionality. But, we're not going to be adding features just because they are there. The emphasis will still be on discussion, with the minimum of distraction.

I don't know if that picture of Brunel's 'Great Eastern' on the Shipyard page sends quite the right message. They launched it sideways, had a hell of a job getting it afloat, and when they finally broke it up years later, they found the skeleton of one of the shipyard workers trapped in the bilges...

Rest assured that we have taken great care to only enable those features that will suit the Ship's established culture. For example, our antipathy towards anything resembling a "like button" has not waned.

Oh, so you're not an IT professional! That sounds much more sensible than many a solution I've come across.
Our IT folks came out with the immortal line "you shouldn't expect every upgrade to be an improvement." I don't think "upgrade" means what they think it means.
(Yes, there can be upgrades that offer better back end stability or scalability, but don't make things visibly better for the user, but that's not what they meant. This was a response to a series of complaints about a new version of some product or other gratuitously removing a number of useful and well-used features.)

I have long come to the conclusion that, in IT circles, "upgrade" means less functionality and less user-friendliness. For example, a recent office "upgrade" to our phones means that we can no longer set any "speed dials."

Well I might as well have my coming out as a Luddite. I kind of like the Ship as she is because she is what she is and has always been so without ambition to a state of incessant becoming. It’s a space where age and aging have been put on hold. And that’s one reason why I keep coming back.
I say this in a sense of a Swiss mineral water producer’s catchy slogan: “Aues wird besser, aber s’Valser Wasser bliibt guet.” [Everything gets better, but Valser Wasser just stays good.] That’s the Ship for me!
[Sigh] but I recognise that times are a-changing and the young folk around here want to do things differently (as do some older folk too). So I’ve made my donation - long overdue anyhow - and am ready to join the new crew.
But would I be unreasonable to request that the new tub sail in the old livery and the cabins and meeting spaces be kept in the accustomed no-nonsense sobriety?
And finally spare a thought for the fate of our faithful and trusty crew of emojis. Here’s one out in protest:
Will they too be granted safe passage to the new vessel? Or are they rather to be planked or scuppered along with rest? If so, they will be sorely missed. ![[Waterworks]](graemlins/bawling.gif)

I think molopata is speaking for those shipmates who would like to know the extent to which the new ship will be "backwards compatible" given the statement in the OP that "we’re upgrading the ship’s logo, slimming down the huge amount of content we have, and concentrating on the things we do best. The ship is basically getting ready for a new voyage, and we hope you’ll be with us in this exciting new venture"
In short, while we all accept that the captain owns and commands the vessel, will he decide on the course (and possibly destination) to a greater extent than is currently the case?

I read the slimming down as more to do with the magazine and other activities outside the boards, which for people who use the Ship but not the community boards is the Ship. Simon did say that the boards are to stay and were to be transferred to Vanilla the rest of the Ship was moving to Wordpress. RuthW also said that the Eighth Day board is remaining, so it sounds as if most of this area will be transferred to Vanilla.

But she isn't. Originally a paper publication, then a decade later an online magazine with a subscription board (you had to pay), then online magazine with the first set of boards similar to today, then those were changed to today's boards and we all had to re-register.
The ship changes technology periodically and always has done so. Since the earliest bulletin boards, it has been the people who made the ship what it was. I do not think the new technology will change that.

Yep. The changes to the magazine section will be far more dramatic than those to the boards.

Not so much "transferred" as "recreated". We've spent a good four months building and testing the new boards from scratch, and we still have some cosmetic work to do before they're ready to go live. But while the board structure has been replicated no actual content is being transferred - the new boards will be a wonderfully blank slate upon which all manner of new debates, games, prayers, studies and conversations will be written.

Of course, there are some of us who witnessed the invention of the printing press and possibly even a certain Jonah being swallowed by a fish.
And of course they are right, things do (have to) change. Eventually. What Ye Admins have done admirably well though is not fall for every latest fad. The Ship has thrived on the written word (and of course a select number of right honourable emojis) rather than the use of embedded pictures and animated prancing pink ponies. So I of course look forward to seeing what they come up, but do assume I'll miss some things we leave behind.

We're right there with you on that sentiment - except for the fact that the current UBB.classic board software is no longer supported, and has developed some unfixable glitches. So the Captain went searching for the most fundamentally Ship-like board software to rebuild with.
