the Shipboard Memories thread in heaven has sparked another question - will the new Ship / boards have a Gallery, or other method of posting real pictures of ourselves (for example to identify people "pre" shipmeet) or to store pictures of shipmeets that people used to put on Flickr and then link to ?

Hi folks,

Just dropping by this thread to see if there’s any questions (for those new to it I’m the technical person working on the new ship).

Looks like the main question is: when? To which the answer is: hopefully sometime this month. Well do our very best. I think the captain would rather build the right ship than set sail with something with flaws, so we’re not necessarily in a hurry. But progress is being made.

Can I thank you all again for your huge generosity. I don’t know exactly what the extra money will be used for (contrary to popular belief, we didn’t have a huge tech booze-up over Christmas) but it will definitely be put aside for improvements and maintenance to the ship and every £ has been greatfully received.

You are BRILLIANT! Thank you. I hope we can do you proud.

I am not a techie.

As far as I am aware board software these days does come with a Gallery software; however I do not know the actual function. It is likely that a Gallery is something that would have to be turned off to not have one rather than something that is added. But photos will, if we have one, will need to be approved before being viewable to prevent trolls posting porn.

It would depend on someone being available to do the approving.

That is when the job becomes the most frantic. Testing the software with techies will find a few bugs. Even employing trained idiots to beta test the software will only find the glitches they are trained to find. It is only when they have made the software safe, secure and working without falling over when used properly and the software is released to the untrained idiots of the real world, people like me, that the real bugs present themselves.

Software designers are working against evolution.
They make something idiot proof just as evolution comes up with a better idiot. [Paranoid]

So bear with the techies post launch. They need sleep like everybody else. Buy shares in coffee companies now.

Heck I was a programmer for years (and I still work in IT, although I've not cut code for twenty years).

The managers used to buy us coffee and pizza because they didn't want us to make the office smell of beer and curries.

I have a question. I keep permanently logged in because I can never remember the password jumble of letters and numbers. Will we have to re-apply for membership anew? Or do we get shifted over somehow?

Sorry if these are silly questions. I'm not very technically au fait.

It's not possible to transfer the membership database to the knew software (or, indeed to any modern software that was going to do what we needed). So, everyone will need to register again and chose a new password (unlike the current software you chose that during registration rather than be assigned one that you change to something memorable later).

Going back to my Gallery question, (and sort of answering it myself) I've just noticed that this current board has a space in the profile section to link to a web-based photo of oneself, providing it is sourced somewhere we own.
I don't know how many people have made use of it, probably very few as not many people have their own webspace to host a picture (hence the provision of the Ship Gallery

I would expect that newer software may have the functionality to upload a photo of oneself into the Profile section for purposes of identification.

It does, but the photo you upload then becomes your avatar. I suspect many posters will prefer not to use pictures of themselves that way.

I do hope that we recognise each other under the new Conditions, as there are several Shipmates whose posts I always read, and I look forward to meeting them again on the fresh, new, decks.

If you go to your profile and edit it, there will be a copy of your avatar visible. You can copy that onto your own computer. Make a note of where it is, and then when you sign up for the new boards you can upload it to your new profile then.

If you click on the link, you'll find further discussion on how to save your avatar - any file will do.

The images themselves can be any size you like (within reason!). Once uploaded to your profile you will then have the option to define the thumbnail image that will accompany your posts. It's a bit like how you select part of a bigger picture to use as your profile pic in Facebook, if that helps.

By definition the most active members will be the first to sign up, so they will get first choice of names by default. The working assumption is that virtually everyone will either choose to register with their existing name or switch to a new name that hasn't been used before.

I can't think of a single currently-active poster who would be dick enough to deliberately steal another currently-active poster's name (not least because it would perforce mean abandoning their own name), but in the unlikely event that two people try to claim the same name then we have the ability to cross-check your registration email addresses to determine who was using it here.

As stated earlier on this thread, we have also banned certain names (e.g. Erin, ken, Gambit) from being used at all.

I agree it would be highly unlikely, but thought I'd ask anyway.

Is this an automated process, or only arises if someone complains?
I can envision an "active"* poster wishing a name change. "Oh, I've never seen a Vera the Venusian. I shall take that name." Meantime, registered, but "inactive" lurker Vera the Venusian decides to register on the New Ship and finds the name taken. Being a lurker, s/he doesn't feel comfortable to challenge a long-time poster.

*There are people who actively lurk, but do not sign-in as they are not wishing to post.

As stated earlier on this thread, we have also banned certain names (e.g. Erin, ken, Gambit) from being used at all.

I can't find that post but I am tempted to reboard as ThomasDF, merseymike or Frank Mitchell.
