Joke submitted by EpiscoWhat

A man wants to join a monastery, so he goes and talks to the abbot. The abbot says he can join, but there is one rule. The monks take a vow of silence and can only say two words every ten years to the abbot. The man joins, recieves his robes and is led to his cell.

Ten years go by and the man says his two words, "Cold cell!"

Ten more years go by and the man says his two words, "Bad food!"

Ten more years go by and the man says his two words, "I quit!"

To which the abbot replies, "It's about time. All you've done since you've got here is bitched!"

Rather than an attack on religion this is just using the monk's vow of silence as a prop. It is unlikely therefore to cause any offence.

However the punch line was too much of a mouthful to be punchy enough and therefore the joke wasn't funny.

about the wordy punchline, isn't that half the point, that Fr Abbot isn't sticking to the Rule?

alternatively, could you re-phrase his reply into two words? ( i think it has to be something like "hypercritical[sic] softie" ? )

Heard it first at school, about 112 years ago. But then there was no limit to the number of words - that avoided th eproblem of the Fr Abbott's response.
No offence.
