What surprised me was that Baptist Trainfan did not catch onto the language as easily. I thought it was part of the shared heritage with English Baptists.

Interestingly both the CofE BCP and Common Worship services describe marriage as a covenant, and neither of them call it a sacrament. [ 11. February 2018, 21:55: Message edited by: BroJames ]

You find it connected in with Covenant Theology* and picking up terms from this and applying them elsewhere. So often Church Membership (confirmation) is talked of in terms of covenant, Marriage is and I suspect though I cannot recall it that ordination is sometimes talked that way as well. I also suspect that when religious life is present the idea also rears its head. So yes it is intriguing that they overlap with the sacraments; it is not perfect as not last rights or confession.

*Opening line has the definite article when it should be the indefinite, much of mainline Reformed is post-Covenant which was pretty thoroughly debunked in the 1950s by Barthians

Ah, thanks.

I agree, though not for the reason you put forward. My problem is that people come to church for a wedding with, quite possibly, no real belief in the God before whom they are making their vows. (And yes, obviously one cannot know the depths of belief in individuals' hearts).
Does this actually happen at Baptist churches? I'm quite surprised. The CofE I can understand because of its status as the default church, but I'd have thought that anyone approaching a Baptist church for a wedding would have at least a vague cultural memory that Baptists can be rather particular about God....

In general you're right - but you'd be surprised. My last church was a rather attractive town centre chapel which people tended to see as "a good place to get married". Equally couples choose to get married in a particular place because of family tradition even if they apparently have no belief themselves.

The downside of owning a pretty church, eh! Did you send those people off to the CofE?
