Count me in for both picnics please. I'm a pescatarian so tuna is very acceptable for example, but I don't eat meat.

Yea - what we'll do is to buy the food and then divide the cost by how many people are eating.
I was thinking caviar etc

Yes it is a good time. I was beginning to wonder who the pizza fairy was!
Since I will be contributing the entire cost of the chilies (of whatever provenance) plus some pista rolls (sweeties of heaven, truly!) perhaps you might save me a piece?

On quite another matter altogether I will be also contributing some 50 bags of a very nice Indian tea, bought at source, for libational purposes.
I will also be bringing some coffee for dear Smudgie. Coffee drinkers may apply to her. I understand that begging works.

Hello! We would like to come for the day on Saturday (Junior has a social engagement involving the birthday party of our neighbour's little boy on Sunday so we will just be coming for the one day.). That is me, Dave and Junior (who will be coming up to 11 months).
We are catching the 9am ferry from Lymington on Saturday and going back on the 9pm one.
We would like to go on the picnic on Saturday morning and to the meal on Saturday night. Dave and I happily eat meat, though we like veggie food too, generally. Junior likes bread and cheese and hummous and breadsticks, we could bring some food for him.
It would be helpful if the restaurant could provide a highchair for him. (I think we will go for the children's organic menu and help him out with some of it ).
We were wondering whether we might be able to do something more baby-friendly than Osborne House on Sat pm as, lovely as it is, Dave and I have already been and Junior might not fully appreciate it. However, we have not got any definite ideas on this.
We are offline atm as our electricity supply is down but hope this will be very temporary!
love

There is a children's play area at Osborne House and apparently it's a very good place to see red squirrels. I don't know if that will be enough to make it bearable for the little ones...

I am wondering though if it is sensible for 2 adults to pay over £20 together to get into Osborne if we are mainly going to play in the playground (or can you just go to the playground?).
There is apparently quite a nice zoo on the Isle of Wight - that might be another alternative perhaps?

Not as good as I hoped but there is a grounds only ticket which is cheaper. In other words if you are not going around the house you don't have to pay to go around the house.
I am used to it working the other way, where there is a parking fee which covers the grounds (cheapish) and then quite hefty fees for house and any other attractions.

We have a parasol, which I'm happy to take, and we'll be taking picnic blankets. I think it's rather optimistic to plan for sun (Snow, maybe!)
If those who have little little ones prefer not to go to Osborne House, you are, of course, welcome to stay at Smudgie Towers and play with the trains! See what you think. Pants, I wouldn't mind betting that Alien would rather like Swiss Cottage and the carriage rides as well as the play area. She goes in for free on my English Heritage card if you do choose to go to Osborne, but it'll be up to you of course.
Whether we do Osborne House first on Saturday or the beach first will depend on the tide timetables which I should be able to look at online after the weekend.
Pants, what time do you have to leave on the Sunday. If you wanted to do half the train ride, I could put my car at Havenstreet before church and then bring you and Pete back early if that helped.
I haven't done a wet weather plan for Saturday - better pray for good weather ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

I'd written all this earlier (before Smudgie posted!) and forgot to add 'hit reply'!!
quote: Originally posted by welsh dragon: There is apparently quite a nice zoo on the Isle of Wight - that might be another alternative perhaps?
'Fraid we weren't impressed by the zoo at all when we went in October. Couple of ideas which are north side of the island. We went to the ebutterfly one last year but dont know anything about the farm.
Alternatively, we'll happily go Geocaching cos we've not done all the ones on the island yet, and if Smudgie is moving there's no incentive to go there any more!
But also...
Smudige, that had crossed my mind about the train. We'd love to do that, but I don't think we'd even manage that. We're on the 2.30, but wouldn't that mean we are meant to be there at 2pm??

Pants, which ferry are you going on? If it's East Cowes or the Fishbourne ferry, as long as your car was ready we could leave Havenstreet at 1.33 and get you to the ferry for just after 2. It would just take a bit of forward planning. I'm sure it's possible.
Incidentally, those people who will need picking up from various ferry terminals on Friday/Saturday (Tractor Girl, I've noted you!), can you send me a quick email to tell me what time and which location so that I can plan pick ups? Also, can those people who are stopping Sunday night please let me know again too so that I can confirm it with the houseboat people. I am finding it a bit tricky to keep track this year (goodness knows why).

I'll be arriving on the ferry (via Southhampton... I think) on Friday. Haven't actually bought tickets yet. I had planned on just showing up at the station and using the ticket machine.
For returning, I need to be at the Portsmouth bus station on Sunday night for a coach leaving at 1800.

Heh. And you think *you're* disorganised, Smudgie! I reckon I could beat you hands down in a disorganising context.
Based on current plans, ecu and I will be on the ferry from Soton that arrives at the Westerer of the two Coweses at 16:38. If earlier or later would be more convenient (e.g. if other people are travelling on a different ferry and it would be easier to pick us all up together), I reckon we're pretty flexible.
I still need to think about travelling back. I might see if I can spend Monday afternoon in Soton doing 'research' (and then go climbing at Calshot in the evening).

I'm on the 3pm from Southampton that gets into East Cowes at 3.55. I guess the easiest thing is for me to make my way over to East Cowes and pick you up.
It looks easy enough on the map - perhaps Smudgie will advise whether it's as easy as it looks.

I keep half-thinking about starting a thread suggesting another Yorks/North East meet, but currently I really should be focusing my energies on uni work (hmmm, why are you currently on the Ship then, tiger?). Might start one in a week or two's time if I manage to sort current essay and such out by then.

apparently it's a 50-mile round trip by car, and so much easier if you come over on the footbridge to East Cowes and meet me there. I'll PM you.
