Who fancies a meal on the evening of 16th May [M's birthday] at the India Club on The Strand?
It's my next to last evening as I fly home on the Friday.
The India Club is not mandatory but is easy to get to - an alternative would be Sagar at 31 Catherine Street, Covent Garden - not far away at all - their website is here. It has had good reviews and seems affordable.
12th April: 17th May is Ascension Day and so may not suit all - I am not sure about changing dates now, I can probably manage it if necessary - what do others think? The only other possible date due to other commitments is the night before: Wednesday 16th May. [ 18. April 2012, 02:44: Message edited by: Welease Woderwick ]

Aha, it's all done with mirrors!
Actually I am waiting until I know a bit more about my Manchester bit before picking a probable date - and I need to remember the name of the venue.
Aha, again, Google Earth™ identifies it as Croma in Chorlton. I'll start that thread as soon as I have checked with the friends I shall be staying with near there.

I'm in.
I'm going to be near Sagar in Covent Garden later today (it's London Fashion Week dahlings, lots of stuff going on in nearby Somerset House) so will see if I can check it out. I do love the India Club though, it's just so.......Indian.

I finally got to check out Sagar in Covent Garden last night. The dosas and uttapayam were passable but I've had better elsewhere in London and the curries on the menu were pretty much all the standard northern Indian fare. Not quite sure why they brag about bringing unknown south Indian food to London, I didn't see anything I couldn't get elswhere (and Rasa for example do much more interesting south Indian dishes.) Though it's possible the thalis were more interesting.
I think we'll have more fun at the India Club.

Okay, time marches on and planning is happening, including packing packets of chilli powder - anyone else apart from Tubbs, Spike and moonlitdoor wanting chilli powder? If so please post, preferably on the chilli powder thread, and let me know so that I can be sure to bring enough - I'd hate to end up a packet sort and leave Spike without ![[Biased]](wink.gif)

Is having the Meet on that Thursday going to be a problem for lots of people? I hadn't considered the Church's calender when picking the dates. I'm not sure about changing it this late, what do folks think?
...and the translation of weekday Feast Days to the nearest Sunday is a fairly modern innovation, isn't it? And it only applies to one part of the church.

A curry at the India Club would be a nice change for a shipmeet, but not on Ascension Day. The best I could possibly do would be to join you for dessert or drinks afterwards, maybe. If there is a chance of moving it to the Wednesday, however, I'm in. If not, enjoy!

Okay folks, the thread title has changed and the Meet will now be at The India Club on Wednesday 16th May - sadly this probably excludes one Shipmate, unless he can get his meeting that afternoon over VERY quickly, but it does allow several others to attend who would have been prevented the following day.
I look forward to seeing you all then.

Okay, timing - I arrive At Victoria Coach Station at about 3 p.m. and then intend trolling over to Waterloo with a HEAVY bag to put it in left luggage [is there still one there?] for the evening and will then wander about a bit before heading to The India Club for about ?6.30? I would be pleased if we could aim to eat not late as I have to get back to Waterloo then out into leafy Surrey before my friends want to retire for the night. It's about an hour on the train so ideally the 9 p.m. train and latest the 9.30 train. From memory I reckon a 15/20 minute walk from restaurant to station but I hate being rushed so I'd like to leave about 9 p.m. - is that suitable for everyone.
Yes, I will bring chilli powder - it is all ready to pack and I must not leave it in the bag at Waterloo.
eta: do we need to book? I reckon it will be about 12 - 14 of us. Any volunteers to do the booking? [ 27. April 2012, 08:57: Message edited by: Welease Woderwick ]

There are allegedly left luggage facilities at Waterloo, between platforms 11 and 12, though I can't say I have ever noticed and I am there a lot. I'll check to see whether the facility is functional now, because the whole station is a bit of a building site at the moment. If not, I have a Plan B which I will PM you.
As to booking, I have tried to phone and it just rings and rings. I'll keep trying, or else I will pop in there and ask, but I am happy to take on the task. I count 12 confirmed, so I would book for 14 and reduce the number on the day if necessary - but better to have more space at table anyway.
But do count on me to answer both these questions within the next few days.
For interest, there is a menu available on a link at the bottom of this page: India Club.
The restaurant is BYOB, which does not require a great deal of forward planning, as I believe you can carry your drink up from the bar.

Very good. That is 14 confirmed.
We have a reservation at the India Club for 16 on the 16th. I can adjust the numbers closer to the time if it goes up or down, but I aimed high at this remove.
The booking is for 6pm in the bar, moving up to the restaurant at 6.30pm. You can take drinks up to the restaurant or bring a bottle of wine or whatever.
The booking is in the name "SHIPMATE". They also have my first name and mobile number, for those of you who know those facts, but the word Shipmate should suffice.
Also confirmed left luggage at Waterloo - WW please check your PMs. It's been relocated to the Southbank end of the concourse for now.

No more takers?
Reservation confirmed - one big table at 6.30 in the restaurant, although as WW wants an early night I think some of us will be convening in the bar from 6.00pm. The reservation is in the name of SHIPMATE.
A meal from the set menu is £14 a head. The chap said it is a "good deal".
And as previously mentioned, the restaurant is not licenced but you can bring your own, either from the bar or from "Tesco or whatever".
NOTE: CASH ONLY - NO CARDS! Location map and contact details.
