I would define a fundamentalist as somebody who is so confident they are right, they cannot learn from others. The downside to this is that neither can they teach- for learning is in the conversation.

For me, the take on the twins in Josephine's story is a little different. My Christ would say; 'You two idiots, neither of you get it, do you. Come here, I have room for you both. And your mates. Let me show you what relationship, what love, is really all about. And when you are ready, and able and confident, you can share some of my love, my relationship, with others as well.' Grace intrinsically linked with judgement for all. My God judges all the same- with Grace.

But then I'm not orthodox.
Hell, I don't know what label, I'd call myself*.

*gun, fish, barrel- use these words in a cogent thought.

Dude, do what you want, but RooK is trying to help you out, because that really looks stupid. You ever see some guy at a dance club snapping his fingers and playing air guitar? Scare quotes are the textual equivalent of that.

I certainly wouldn't gloat about it, just as I wasn't gloating in what I said earlier. However, I suspect that if you did lose your faith, you'd be as much as an irritating little shit about it as you are now as an Orthodox, and I'd tell you so.

Actually, it is a real (albeit online) place. We're in it now.

It's also a town in Norway, but I don't think anyone was referring to that in their posts.

Thing is, that's exactly what scare quotes are -- denoting metaphorical or other figurative use of a term. Overuse or misuse of scare quotes in writing is only slightly less an egregious affectation than is using air quotes when speaking.

Get over yourself. You're not fooling anyone with your mock humility.

I agree, nothing inherently wrong, so long as it isn't blind love and pig-headed adherence. Generally it's a lack of humility which gets people backs up, but while that occurs everywhere, those known as fundies do it best.

I'm not accusing anyone of anything here, but do you sometimes wonder how easy it is for people to accuse others of this very "lack of humility?"

Good point - it is very easy to discern lack of humility in others, which is why most people most of the time make a big effort not to come across as arrogant, pompous pratts. So that makes it all the more obvious when someone doesn't bother.

Stop digging, Mark.

It takes a while to work the Ship out. I've not sussed it yet either. Just as it takes time for someone to learn the ropes in Orthodoxy or any othr Christian tradition.

Look, learn, then engage brain and speak.

  1. The exact meaning of "scare quotes" is: ...quotation marks placed around a word or phrase to indicate that it does not signify its literal or conventional meaning. Mark,

You need a number of things. Firstly you must ignore the peanuts thrown your way. Consider that an elementary exercise in discernment. Just in case the invective has got in way your most pressing need appears to have already been outlined in Josephine's posts.

Otherwise, getting a girlfriend and moving out of the parental home look wise.

I'm guessing you can't "poke" people on this...

That's the tiredest, lamest, least original jibe you could aim at a liberal, but in any case, on what grounds do you think I'm a liberal fundie?
I wasn't expecting good reviews from you, dear
I think your antics on the Ordinariate thread in Purgatory speak for themselves. You have as much tolerance in you as a Bennite at a Labour Conference circa 1981

How amusingly meaningless. Everything smarter than roadkill would count as "intellectual" from your perspective.

You're probably right. If I were to hound your every word, and mash your filthy fucking stupidity in your miserable face over and over, it might be exactly the thing you need to finally find the iota of will it would take to stop sucking as much as you do. Even if it's not what you need, it's certainly what you deserve.

Oh, I don't know. There's something quite fascinating about having a chew toy trying to have a go at Rook. Rather like watching a cute animated character hurl themselves full tilt at a brick wall. I expect little stars or tweety birds to appear.

Also reminds me of that computer classic, Lemmings.

You can't expect me to like those miserable misogynists, especially the ones who've been incredibly selfish while they were in the C of E, but being rude about people who you strongly disagree with doesn't make you any kind of fundie. I did say, and meant sincerely, that, while very glad to see the back of them, I wished them well in their new communion.
Anyway, the word 'fundamentalist/fundie' has become hopelessly devalued. It used to have a very specific meaning: someone who believed in the literal truth, as well as the inerrancy, of the Bible, or in other words a young-earth creationist. Now it's more or less synonymous with 'bigot', and is just a vague insult-word.

OK, I obviously seem to be missing something... This guy RooK thinks he's the big man on here, I can see he's "Admin" whatever that means. But in reality, he's just a little boy (behind a PC screen) who's given far more credence than he deserves, just because he knows how to use a few big words.

First time I've thoroughly agreed with you, Mark, and probably the last. That stream of potty-mouthed invective above was just pathetic. I know this is Hell, but even in Hell a modicum of intelligence and originality doesn't come amiss.

"Stream"? Jeez, you really don't get out of the basement much, do you? As flows of profanity go in Hell, that was a mere trickle. A brook at best.

I have *far* more sense than to tell RooK what to do, but this looks to me like a challenge he might like to rise to…

Also, how much money would I need to pay for Josephine to change her title to "Ship's Babushka"?
