I've had a number of problems with "updates" over the years and sometimes the only way out is to use "system restore". On one of these occasions I might have inadvertently chucked out Java. How do I find out?

OK I have installed java 6 and managed to get the first cafe window open. It wants my user name and password. Do i use a separate password for the cafe?

FAQs state that every page requiring a user name and password has a "lost password" link.
The one on the door of the cafe ain't.

It's the same password you use to sign into the Ship. And the same sign in name you use to sign in, not your user name. My sign in name is my real name - and I'm really not called Curiosity killed ...
Is your sign in name one of your previous user names?

Joyful Noise did something very interesting to the Café just now. Arrived with no avatar, no name and I couldn't get the Who's Here? menu up - I was on the rooms menu until they'd left.
The bar came up saying *enters* and *leaves* but no name, no nothing.

Another bug noticed - seems as though the cafe chokes in ampersands etc in the user's Ship name.
User "JoyfulNoise & Parrot OKief" logged into the cafe.. but it didn't show the user's name or avatar.. just blank. I suggest there is an issue around the ampersand character in the ID. Maybe it's one of those characters that may need to be ignored for Cafe logins?
Thanks to all the devs as always.

We had a funny tonight in the café (I was in there after sorting out Secret Santa, honest). Think² was managing to chat to me by pm, but the main room disappeared for her. It looked as if she was logged out but we could continue chatting by pm - both opening and closing the pm window. She still hadn't left as far as the café was concerned when I left just now - some time later.

Is the cafe software still under on-going development? Are there likely to be any upgrades, new features etc? I note that back in February Melon said that sounds had been ordered and they hoped to have them installed in a few weeks. Clearly that didn't happen so I take it there was a problem there?
I'm not nagging, honest! Just curious...

I've just clicked the "Live Chat Cafe" link at the top of the boards. Depending on your browser, you may be prompted to allow pop-ups or perhaps an Active-X control (I can't recall which).
If still no luck, then you may need to manually install Java. Try www.java.com and click the "Free Java Donwload" button. then try the Live Chat Cafe link again.

Ship developers - this is actually a critical request.
IT appears that Ubuntu's managers have decided to remove Sun Java from their reporistories in Ubuntu 10.04 (the next release of their Linux distribution).
This will immediately put Ubuntu users up on a sandbar as GNU Java is not up to the same place... as soon as they upgrade.
Please could you ensure the cafe works fully with GNU Java (opengdk, I think) as well as Sun's? At least until Sun's product comes back in some form..

Café development for issues affecting more than three people are slow going. I suggest avoiding Ubuntu build 10.04 if the Café is really that important to you.
