I was enthralled by Bandstand in the very early 60s, as a preteen. But by 1966 or so it was definitely uncool in my peer group of 14-year-olds. I was amazed that it kept going into the 1980s.

There is a report that Jonathan Frid, the original Barnabas Collins of Dark Shadows has died. Although, with a new Dark Shadows movie about to be released, I really really hope this isn't a publicity stunt of extremely bad taste.

That would be me, I guess.
Some of us watched Canadian Bandstand, at least at some point. Note how the music listed below does not seem to go with the guy who supposedly did the list.

Bert Weedon has played his last chord.

I've often wondered what he made of the guitar maker in Terry Pratchett's "Soul Music" - Blurt Wheedown. I guess now we'll never know...

No, it's true. This article says Frid has a cameo role in the upcoming film and that he got to hang out with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton. Or looked at it another way, that Depp and Burton had the privilege of hanging out with him.

Murray Rose, great Australian swimmer, exemplary amateur sportsman and true gentleman died recently.

I am surprised no one from Down Under mentioned this.

But then again he was neither notorious, nor, as far as I am aware, publicly espoused any religious belief.

His family I think, will turn down a state funeral, if one were offered. He will go out with the quiet dignity with which he lived.

Two shockers that I doubt anyone had on their lists.

First, NFL great Junior Seau, a hugely talented linebacker of Samoan descent. [Votive]

Then today, Adam Yauch, AKA MCA of the Beastie Boys died. I don't know if the Beastie Boys were big outside of the United States, but this hip-hop trio did a lot to bring hip-hop to white kids of my generation, and are to date the only white hip-hop act to get five mics from Source magazine. Not bad for three guys of Jewish ancestry from Brooklyn. A few of their songs were classics of my church camp experience, being used on skit night year after year, even by kids who weren't even born when "Licensed to Ill" was released. He was also the director of many of their music videos, which were absolute classics of MTV of my youth. [Votive]

Two down, though I doubt anyone had either on their lists (but just in case):
Carlos Fuentes, author of, among many other things, The Death of Artemio Cruz and major figure in the Latin American Boom, died yesterday at 83.

Chuck Brown, godfather of go-go, at 75. While go-go isn't well known outside DC and its suburbs, within that area, you can't help but know about Chuck.

Another musician, Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees has joined the band in the sky. They can join Donna Summer in representing Disco.

Once again, another musician of the 1970s died in their sixties. Must have been something in the water. Or the drugs.

The BGs were not my cup of tea exactly, but they were also very influential. And I believe that Robin Gibb was very involved in other musicians, still in the business. Which is excellent.

The scythe guy seems to have busy of late, so it must have been hard to keep up.

Richard Dawson has gone to join the rest of his Hogan's Heroes buddies and evaluate the game shows available to watch there.
