Not quite sure where to put this to be honest and maybe hosts will move it to an appropriate area....

In icons after Rublev's Trinity, I've noticed some that have the devil's face floating in the cup/basin. Can someone explain what it represents, and possibly when it appeared (don't think it's in Rublev's icon)?

I have never heard it said to be the devil's face. I was told it is a calf's head, representing the calf that Abraham served the three visitors when they came to him (see Gen 18:7-8).

I suppose it does seem a bit odd; I'll look for some sources on that.

Aaaah! Maybe thats what it is. It did look a bit human though.
Here is Rublev's Trinity. I always assumed the stuff in the cup was communion mush.

Here is a head of a calf.

And a charming vegetarian offering.

Aha! So the confusion is due to a combination of stylised features, rufous colouration and horns.

It sounded bizarre but it seems logical when you see it actually!
