I wonder if perhaps he might choose to be named after one of the more recent martyrs/more recently canonised.
Say, Maximilian I or perhaps Oscar I if he's South American.
I think I'll go for Maximilian I. OK it's unlikely, but so what?

As much as I admire St. Maximilian Kolbe, I'm not sure I'd want to be named after a recent martyr, though. It might put ideas in some nutball's head.

If you think about it, all we have to do is hand this list to a passing Cardinal, and the RCC has about another 400 years' worth of papal names.

I'm going to go for John Luke I. Not only will it keep some continuity with tradition while also adding in some novelty, it will also allow the possibility of some lovely Star Trek references (then Picard could have been named for the Pope, for instance), or for the Holy Father to be played by Patrick Stewart in any subsequent TV drama [ 06. It seemed that the singular popes on Wikipedia were given the numeral 1.
My choice, since I feel the church needs to lighten up alot, is Dionysius II.

I'll opt for Sylvester IV.
In German "Sylvester" has come to mean Hogmanay -and since unlike the Queen's nobody celebrates the Pope's birthday we would have a party and even fireworks for him every year!

OTOH, perhaps none of them will have. Could be each cardinal has already scanned this list and mentally deleted every name from his personal repertoire of Things I Will Call Myself When I'm Pope.

Many thanks for the congratulations. I thought it was a legitimate choice though a long shot. I'm not sure what this particular pope choosing Francis means (though that is more a matter for purgatory I suspect).

Indeed, one of the first two!
Either that, or this is a papacy for the birds.
