A Dean is The Very Reverend, so presumably the Sub Dean is The-Not-Quite-As-Reverend-As-Him.

"I'm With Reverend"? And a little arrow pointing?

I thought it applied to everyone in the Junior Saints League - eg The Venerable Bede (and isn't it time he was moving up to Blessed Bede?)

No, no, no. The Somewhat Revered. Barely Reverend? I have it: The Reverendum.

All archdeacons are titled 'venerable' whether grand, high or whatever.
But why is this so? (Particularly since it leads to 'venemous arch-demon' jokes).

According to Holy Women Holy Men, the monk writing the inscription on his tomb was at a loss for words and an angel came by night and filled in "Venerabilis."

The Catholic Encyclopedia entry for the Venerable Bede discounts the angelic epitaph theory.
St. Bede the Venerable was canonized in 1899 by Pope Leo XIII, who declared him a Doctor of the Church and established May 27 as his feast day.

To make Ancient and Venerable Archdeacons sound more approachable, they should henceforward be called Archie. Imagine the conversation between a Dean and an Archdeacon, meeting for the first time.
'Ello Dean, I'm Archie.
It really sounds quite matey.
Which reminds me of the old joke: Q: 'What do you call a vicar on a motorbike?' A: 'Rev'. The old 'uns are always the best.

Have you come across the Dean of Kings College on the Strand in his leathers?
