This is actually why I personally prefer white wine. Not because of any lofty theological reason, or anything to do with practicality: amber wine in a plated chalice just looks beautiful.
Red wine in an earthenware cup would no doubt be closer to Our Lord's practice at his Supper, but it doesn't move me in the same way!

Many years ago I had a girlfriend who came from a small remote village in the north of England. It was all very much like something out of Jane Eyre, though it was only the 1990s. We visited a local girl who had just had a baby; my girlfriend had known her from school and felt a bit sorry for her as she had been orphaned and was what the un-PC might call 'a bit simple.'
She and her boyfriend were discussing getting the baby baptized (they still had very much the old working class custom of having the baby 'done'). She said 'I'd like to go to church, but I don't fancy drinking blood.'
Boyfriend: 'Don't be daft - they don't drink blood!'
Girl: 'They DO!' She turned to me. 'Wesley, you go to church, tell 'im they do drink blood.'
Me: (looking down and mumbling) Well...er...it's not ACTUALLY blood, I suppose it's more of a symbolic representation of...erm...mumble...
Girl (losing interest). Well it looks like blood to me!
