I just visited briefly and quite enjoyed it. I'm delighted that when I sign in with my real name (as I do for the Ship), it recognizes me as Scarlett....all dressed up with my dogsbody icon. [Cool]

I'll be peeking in more often.

I logged in, waited for ages, and then got a string of commands showing why I couldn't be connected. I tried to copy them, so I could paste them here, but nothing worked until I'd deleted the window they were in. Any thoughts?

I've just uploaded a new version of the software that allows for clickable links in speech bubbles.

Just make sure you post proper links including the http:// bit - www.ship-of-fools.com on its own won't work.

I can't copy it, but what I get when I try to access the cafe is this:

Socket thread started
IO Error (java.net.SocketException: Malformed reply from SOCKS server)
java.net.SocksSocketImpl : readSocksReply at line -1
java.net.SocksSocketImpl : connect at line -1
java.net.Socket : connect at line -1

java.net.Socket : <init> at line -1
uk.co.darkgreenmedia.faverolle.SocketComms : run at line 98
jave.lang.Thread : run at line-1

I hope I write that out correctly - and I really hope someone can tell me what to do to get into the Cafe. I'm on Firefox, if that makes any difference.

'Malformed reply from SOCKS server'

Suggests you're using a proxy server somewhere along the line. Are you trying to access the cafe using a work's connection, a university or some other shared setup?

Yes, mine is a work's connection - which I am allowed to use for my own needs as well. Does that mean I'm stuffed?

OK, so I just changed my name to Bullfrog.

Out of curiosity, I tried to sign on using my new name. When that didn't work immediately, I tried signing on with my old name (mirrizin), and noticed that both had somehow signed onto the chat cafe (universalist was the only one to witness this feat).

Since name change amnesties happen once every blue moon or so, I'm not sure this will be a long term problem, but it is kind of funny.

ETA: and then my new handle signed off as my old one signed on. Peculiar...

Bullfrog - you have a login name (which you chose when you registered and which never changes) and a display name (which is what is displayed on the boards and can be changed, but only during name-change amnesties).

When I log in to the cafe I use my login name, which isn't "Late Paul", but everyone sees me as "Late Paul".

That doesn't explain why you saw two of yourself though.

My daughter could get into the cafe from uni server from their halls - not sure if she can now as she's been home for the past couple of weeks. But she certainly was helping me test it during the testing period.

We were chatting in the cafe in preference to msn as a better format to use.

I do just want to say, it's been a hoot visiting people in the/a Cafe again. The immediacy of chat is great, and fills in the humanity that is easily missed in posts of frozen text.

Thanks for all the work, looks great in there...but add me to the "not sure about the speech bubbles" list

Just fell out the cafe again (or got booted, if peeps don't like the Baron Knights they only had to say...) and I'm still getting a similar error to this one when trying to get back in...

Probably yes. It depends how friendly you are with IT.

You need to be able to avoid using the proxy server for this application.

Hey people in there I was talking to a little while ago! My computer/cafe window decided to freeze and do its own thing for ages after I posted the flickr link so I didn't get anything after that! It's only just let me do anything - stupid machine! Will try and get back in...

Thank you for the answer. I shall retire and weep into my motley.

I'm new, so may just be doing something wrong here. And I'm not techy, so please bear with me.

When I try to use the Cafe I get a window asking if I want to 'find' or 'save'. Whichever option I choose, I then get a page saying that Windows/Nicrosoft can't open the file.

Any tips please?
