If by that you mean exercising, I endorse that. I ride a bicycle winter and summer. 24 km round trip to work (metal studded tires for winter). Curling with the old guys. Old people soccer once per week. They call lots of things mindfulness today. I find doing something mild to moderately physical with others brings me into the mindful present is a good thing. Liturgy is on the mild end of physical activity.

Is there a link to The Exercises, please? Sorry if I've missed it.
Fineline is correct. It's simply a collection of stretches as recommended, in the main, by a masseuse I see from time to time.
I am naturally indolent though, plus I have never found a form of physical exercise that doesn't bore me witless - with the possible exception of T'ai Chi. But the average domestic environment doesn't really have the space - by the time you've done White Crane Spreads Its Wings you're in the fireplace.

I watched a man doing Ti Chi in the carpark at the mall before the shops opened on a Sunday. He looked so graceful and I have always felt like a klutz when I tried. It's one of those things that looks easy after years of practice.

I also find the exercises the physio gave me incredibly boring. They are not difficult and they make a real positive difference to my shoulder, but they are just so utterly boring, so I often don't do them. The only exercises I like to do are swimming, walking, and jumping on my mini trampoline, and these exercises are all good in their own way, but they don't help with my specific shoulder and neck problems in the way that the boring physio exercises do.

I began bicycling to work when gas hit $4.50 a gallon in the US. This was about 8 or 9 years ago. I find that if the exercise is actually helping the bottom line it is marvelously motivating. Every rount-trip to work by bike saves me 20% of my commuting costs per week. If they would just get it to where you could hook up your cycling to a home generation system I would be all set.

There are hotels somewhere that offer discounts to guests that do x kilometres on their generating bikes! I read about it years ago but can't remember any details. Strap the kids in and tell them they can only get a warm shower after they have generated enough power to heat the water!
...and to heat the water for your shower as well, of course.

My knee is getting better 3 or 4 months ago I fell down the steps and hurt my knee and it is s-l-o-w-l-y getting better. The physio visit was painful, but when I was upright and walking home afterwards it didn't hurt.
Beenster, be kind to yourself. As Wodders said anything with sharp, pointy things is horrible. I think that discomfort in any part of the head feels worse because it's harder to separate from it.

I've got rid of the post-ankle fracture walking boot. No longer trapping it (and me) between chair and dinging table! The ankle is improving all the time, and I can walk comfortably provide it's fairly slow. Speed puts too much pressure on the recovering joint. got the new car too. ![[Yipee]](graemlins/spin.gif) [ 17. December 2015, 15:52: Message edited by: jacobsen ]

I, too, tend to fine exercises boring. To build up some strength in my shoulder I finally decided on going to a batting cage. I use the heaviest wood bat I can find (not any of those wimpy lightweight aluminum bats for me!). I find this keeps my interest because, whether I swing and miss or swing and hit the ball, the shoulder is getting exercise. And there is a genuine joy in making contact with the ball. When I started, I could only regularly make contact on the slow pitch machine, but over time I have worked myself up to the fast pitch. Quite, quite proud of myself!

Ah. The killer phrase there is 'going to'. If there is one thing more repugnant than doing exercises in the comfort of own home, it's organising to leave COOH and travel to some place full of people and machines. Very possibly having to wear special clothes for the purpose. Maybe even encounter the horror of locker rooms and *shudder* showers. [ 17. December 2015, 16:29: Message edited by: Firenze ]

A fair point. Batting practice at home does tend to be rather hard on the bric-a-brac.
Or so I have heard.
No personal experience on that sort of thing. No, no, certainly not. Must have read it somewhere. In something. Yes. Quite the reader I am. Is that my phone ringing? Sorry, must dash...

It is holidays down here. Smell the sunscreen and insect repellent. Time for beach cricket or backyard cricket after lunch. Come downunder.
Edited to add:
This is a reply to Hedgehog talking about batting practice. Backyard and beach cricket is popular downunder in this summer holiday time. "Come downunder" is not meant to refer at all to the downunder thread. [ 01. January 2016, 04:58: Message edited by: Lothlorien ]

Our guests, who returned to Blighty on Monday, had/have bad knees similar to mine and encouraged me to walk a bit more strenuously than I am wont with good results for my knees - so now I must continue...
...I hope.

Back in June I had a hernia op. This major surgery took ages to recover from. I had several post op appt. The pain became worse and I paid a lot of money to have a CT scan. (Some refunded). The result clearly stated lots of inflammation and suggested futher testing. My GP decided it wasn't needed but I took it to the post op appt as requested. My symptoms by this stage were pain, struggling to do basic housework, sleeping 15 hours a day. The dr looked at the scan report, said he had read it(there was no way he could have the hospital had no access to it) he said the pain relief I was taking was too much and stop it and go swimming. He told me basically I'd not improve live with it. After that I became semi suicidal. I'd been told I was a lazy nothing was wrong. So I struggled on doing housework caring for my daughter, feeling constantly like I had morning sickness, constantly vomiting and loosing weight. It wasn't till late November two school mums insisted something was wrong and insisted I go to emergency. So I did repeating the dr said nothing was wrong. Entering emergency I didn't even take spare clothes assuming I'd be told go home. Turns out I was assessed and my bloods showed strong inflamation and a futher ct scan showed dividticulitis with an abcess where the last ct suggested futher investigation. Although my pain was bad I felt at least I had an answer. Maybe my pain would be cure able. I've spent 43 days in hospital over the last 2 months and currently in a hospital in the home where a nurse visits daily. The process has been very disruptive to my family esp my daughter. Although I have pain I'm anaemic and have no energy it's healing pain. Slowly I should be able to recover although it will take some time. Scar tissue will probably hurt but much less than I was told was what I had to live with.

Oh crap. I've been having tenderness/soreness in my mouth since last Thursday. Sadly, not transient. I am scheduled for a root canal on Monday. I've been down this path too many times before (when you lose count of just how many root canals you have had, I think it is safe to say that you have had too many).

That's where I am now too. Between root canals, crowns and bridges, I have more appliances in my mouth than they sell at Best Buy!
I see the dentist tomorrow for my six-month workover. I've developed a habit of biting my tongue in my sleep. I hope he can prescribe one of those bits that you put in your mouth at night to keep things from misbehaving.

That is one of those things I blame on it being February. (This being All Saints, I deleted the adjective I normally put in front of the word February...rest assured it is alliterative.) I truly hate, loathe and despise this month.

I suspect that the only people who don't loathe and despise February are those of us who were born in it.

I consulted my doctor about my hip ache and he diagnosed it as a ligament. Exercises found on line loosened it right up. My policy is to always keep surgery as the =last= option on the menu. Before resorting to the knife I will work through all possible other treatments.

Not necessarily. I have freaking crippling pain in one knee when I don't stretch out the muscle and tendons, etc. properly every day. It took an x-ray to prove it wasn't actually the joint.
Might as well go find out what's causing it, instead of assuming The Worst™ like I did.

Thank you, BC and LC. Knee replacements are popularly believed to be much more painful than hip replacements, so any solution which simply involves exercise is warmly welcomed. Back to the stationary bike. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Stationary bike plus some walking - different muscles. Recent guest had knee operation recently and they got her walking and then she got me walking and it helped a lot though I haven't quite got her enthusiasm for stairs!

One thing I missed for a long time was that the exercise I was doing was one that didn't actually address the right part of the knee. The knee is so complicated, and I was totally wrong about what bit of it was causing the pain.
