Go forth upon thy journey, Christian soul!
...And may thy place to-day be found in peace,
And may thy dwelling be the Holy Mount

Blessings to all who are keeping vigil for Molly. I offer this prayer from the service of Compline in the BCP:

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake.
Amen.

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound or foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell;
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson

With every power for good to stay and guide me,
comforted and inspired beyond all fear,
I'll live these days with you in thought beside me,
and pass, with you, into the coming year.

The old year still torments our hearts, unhastening;
the long days of our sorrow still endure.
Father, grant to the soul thou hast been chastening
that thou hast promised - the healing and the cure.

Should it be ours to drain the cup of grieving
even to the dregs of pain, at thy command,
we will not falter, thankfully receiving
all that is given by thy loving hand.

But, should it be thy will once more to release us
to life's enjoyment and its good sunshine,
that we've learned from sorrow shall increase us
and all our life be dedicate as thine.

Today, let candles shed their radiant greeting:
lo, on our darkness are they not thy light,
leading us haply to our longed-for meeting?
Thou canst illumine e'ev our darkest night.

When now the silence deepens for our harkening,
grant we may hear thy children's voices raise
from all the unseen world around us darkening
their universal paean, in thy praise.

While all the powers of Good aid and attend us,
boldly we'll face the future, be it what may.
At even, and at morn, God will befriend us,
And oh, most surely on each new year's day!

Signing on for my hour.

I've been thinking how strange and wonderful it is that so many of us who have never met Molly, or even spoken to her, feel such a strong connection with her. It made me think of that
chapter of CS Lewis' "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" where, near the end of their voyage to Aslan's Country, Lucy is looking over the side of the ship and seeing the Sea People under the
surface. They are moving far too quickly to stop, and even so they could not speak to each other:

"Suddenly she saw a little Sea Girl of about her own age.... a quiet, lonely looking girl with a sort of crook in her hand. Lucy felt sure that this girl must be a shepherdess - or perhaps
a fish-herdess - and that the shoal was really a flock at pasture. Both the flock and the girl were quite close to the surface. And just as the girl, gliding in the shallow water,
and Lucy, leaning over the bulwark, came opposite to one another, the girl looked up and stared straight into Lucy's face. Neither could speak to the other and in a moment the Sea Girl dropped astern. But Lucy will never forget
her face. It did not look frightened or angry like those of the other Sea People. Lucy had liked that girl and she felt certain that the girl had liked her. In that one moment
they had somehow become friends. There does not seem to be much chance of their meeting again in that world or any other. But if they do they will rush together with their hands held out."

Only of course we will meet again, in another world, and all of us will know each other instantly. We will recognise Molly of course, by the flocks of pussies and bunnies
frolicking amicably around her!

Signing in for my hour on vigil.

Psalm 31 In te, Domine, speravi
1 In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to shame: deliver me in your righteousness.
2 Incline your ear to me; make haste to deliver me.
3 Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my stronghold; for the sake of your Name, lead me and guide me.
4 Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, for you are my tower of strength.
5 Into your hands I commend my spirit, for you have redeemed me, O LORD, O God of truth.

2 Peter 1:18-19
And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

O Morning Star, Splendour of Light eternal and bright Sun of justice; come and shine on all who live in darkness and in the shadow of death.
—Lord Jesus, come soon!

Stopping by for a moment to pray.

Here's another verse from the song of mehitabel (by Don Marquis):

i once was an innocent kit
wotthehell wotthehell
with a ribbon my neck to fit
and bells tied onto it
o wotthehell wotthehell
but a maltese cat came by
with a come hither look in his eye
and a song that soared to the sky
and wotthehell wotthehell
and i followed adown the street
the pad of his rhythmical feet
o permit me again to repeat
wotthehell wotthehell

my youth I shall never forget
but there s nothing i really regret
wotthehell wotthehell
ther s a dance in the old dame yet
toujours gai toujours gai

Thank you Miss Molly for reminding me of the wonderful archy and mehitabel, which I read so long ago and had forgotten. [Angel]

I spent my lunch hour praying in my car and listening to Hymns of Grace (second on this page). I've had it in my CD player for 2 weeks now. What Wondrous Love Is This says it all for me; I played it over and over, probably 4 times in a row.

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on;
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on.
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be;
And through eternity, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on;
And through eternity, I’ll sing on. [Angel]

about the angels singing and the old redemption story,
and some sweet day I'll sing up there the song of victory.

Praying for a few minutes inspired and moved by the wonderful material others have posted.

In Christ shall all be made alive, we sing!
With Him God's faithful servants He wil bring;
Gathered with joy before the Father's throne
There we shall know,as we ourselves ae known.

"I sought the Lord, and he answered me
and delivered me out of all my terror.

I flew home from Washington today, striving through crowded airports and enduring packed airplanes and the coping with the aftermath of the snow storm on the airlines` schedules, to make it home for the weekend. Then I checked the ship, and saw the thread.

The setting sun changed Tuesday`s snow on the Sangre de Christo Mountains from white to red (named for that effect) above the dark green of the pines above the gold of the wind-sculptured sandstone clifs. I drove out to el Santuario de Chimayo to begin praying for Miss Molly. There at one of the oldest buildings in the Southwest, the symbol of healing and faith since Spanish colonial days, I prayed as the day-night terminator climbed the mountains and the snow cover became dark and chilly.

I turned on the car lights and drove home through the gathering darkness, watching the sliver of crescent moon become visible. And overhead the contrail of a west-bound jet remained illuminated in red and gold, as if another traveler was also struggling toward home and beauty and celebration.

Miss Molly, I just gave the fuzzy family kitties and Ralph-the-ancient another treat of leftover Thanksgiving turkey, and realized that I never finished telling you the tales of Miss Fuzzy, our unwed-teen-mother cat and her offspring.

Of course that doesn't really matter now, but I wish I had discovered you in time to share cat stories. Such is life.

I pray that perhaps when I think about the cats and you and the stories I would have told you, that somehow it gets transformed into a moment of relief as you go through the difficult process of leaving your body.

But I trust that God is there with you, and all our prayers are just tiny extra bits added to his all-encompassing love for you.

Oh, Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in Thy mercy grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last.

Amen

What can you say of a love for a person who you have never met? What manner of love is so devoted that people give up food or sleep to keep vigil over someone thousands of miles away? How can love be deep enough to break hearts when a person is just words on a screen?

That kind of love is utterly irrational.

Lord God, make all of our love irrational.

The day Thou gavest Lord is ended
the darkness falls at thy behest
to Thee our morning songs ascended
Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

The sun that bids us rest is waking
our brethern 'neath the western sky
and hour by hour fresh lips are making
Thy wonderous doings heard on high

We thank Thee that Thy church unsleeping
while earth rolls onward into night
through all the world her watch is keeping
and rests not now by day or night.

Praying offline, not during a specific time, but again and again. I'll put a candle on my desk now for you, Miss Molly.

The magnet is running, the radio is off, with no candle allowed due to health and safety, I have a virtual one lit.

My pray today is that the innermost thoguhts of our hearts are heard, as we cry to God.

Going on the theory that Mom or Marian or St. Sebastian will be reading to Molly:

I just can't get into the vigil format, love, lack of attention span on my part I guess. I find myself taking you with me through everything, rather than peacefully sitting with you.

This from the sister to whom all the other sisters turn when they need someone to lead heartfelt, non-routine public prayer. That's my "rep", I'm such a pray-er. Go figure.

I find myself lifting you up before my Lord intermittently all day and night.

Sometimes you leap into my mind like a football team bursting onto the gridiron through a big paper screen held up by cheerleaders.

It's as if something (Someone, really) is presenting you to me with extra emphasis because you especially need extra prayer-covering right then at that moment. Does that sound odd to you?

Other times it's as if I'm carrying you, or Mom, Dad, Marian, St. Seb, one of those with you, along with me, through some housework or on an errand, whatever happens to be going on.

(That feels odd even to me, even though it's my mind where it's happening. Must sound totally insane, as described.)

No, I'm not one of those who feel the need to credit God with every thought or action, as if the Lord told me particularly to wear the red plaid flannel nightgown to bed, or to send Mike to work today in the fushia sweatshirt...

But I must say, in times like these, when someone is passing through rough seas as you are right now, it looks suspiciously to me like God is helping me to keep you & yours constantly lifted up in prayer, with a single-mindedness far beyond my usual scattershot way...
