I can't recall ever interacting with Genevičve, but it seems that was my loss. My sympathy and prayers for everyone who knew her on the Ship, especially those who knew her in real life too.

At times like this the Ship gives me all the more reason to look forward to heaven and meeting all the people I have known on board, through a glass darkly, in an even more real way than any Shipmeet can afford.
I imagine (probably quite heretically but there we are) being welcomed some day by a particularly raucous and boisterous crowd of Shipmates both famous and less so, on the fringes of the celestial throng, along with some of the poor, oppressed and outcasts they have ministered to. With a bit of luck the Lamb that was slain will be right there in the middle of them somewhere.

Thanks, ebeth. Anyone going to the funeral on May 8th, send a PM and we can meet. I can offer a ride from DC to 2 others (1 space reserved for ebeth).
The cathedral is in the neighborhood of my childhood - there are numerous places we can have a post-funeral gathering, including my mom's house if we don't want to go to a public place.

Genevieve was finishing her PhD as I was thinking about starting mine. I'm not sure how I knew this - was she on the Thesis Support thread? - but whenever I saw her posts I thought of her as "Dr Genevieve" and read her posts with interest. As a middle-aged woman, I was always pleased to know of other middle aged women successfully completing a doctorate. Now that I've read of all her many other skills and occupations I am overawed.

Alas, the only PM I have is a polite yet cranky one. I think it's the only time I crossed swords with Genevieve, as opposed to crossed paths.
At the time I pondered whether it was worth explaining that I thought it was all a bit of a misunderstanding in a thread that had been closed by then.
Add that to the pile of small regrets.

I never interacted with the dear lady, so do not have a 'personal' experience. I can say, however, that when lurking over the years, I did read her slant on things with interest. May God hold her close and give her the best of rest for eternity. So sad.

First, ebeth and maleveque and Motherboard, my condolences to you who knew her personally. I can only imagine how deeply that must be felt. She always seemed to be someone I would have enjoyed knowing.
I guess I would have you tell the folks at St Peter's and in the Diocese of Maryland what you are probably already planning on saying: That there were people from all over the world who loved her, whose lives she touched, and who miss her. And who are holding her community in prayer as they try to come to grips with this terrible loss.
I like how the obituary mentioned her always wearing hats. No wonder she chose an avatar with a big beautiful hat.
