Just sitting here thinking about KEN, only had a few PM's from him, but he was a class act and I'm so sad to hear of his passing, but now I know he is in his heavenly home. My sympathies to his family and friends, and shipmates who had the pleasure to have met him.

I promised some more photos. This and this are from the Kew Meet that geroff mentioned upthread, with geroff, Rosa gallica and Curious Kitten with ken - which was 7 years ago, 28 May 2007. We went on to The Dove.
And this taken in the Mulberry Bush from February 2010 at 10pm, after Ender's Shadow had left. rosamundi, Yangtze and I were still there chatting and ken finally arrived, late, as usual. Then they all started posting on the Ship on their phones (I didn't have a smartphone, just a camera).

I will toast the thought-provoking, the wit, the intellect, the humour and the warmth of ken this evening.
What a loss for us, and what a deep loss for his closer friends and family.
May he rest safely and in peace.

Sympathies and prayers to Persephone Hazard, Busy Knitter and the rest of Ken's family and friends. Also to the members of his church where I'm sure he will be truly missed. I'm sure us shippies will be sharing memories for years to come and making newbies wonder who this remarkable Ken was who everyone keeps referring to. He will be remembered by so many around the world who learnt so much from his wisdom and incredible knowledge, even though we never new him in 'real life'.

So sorry to hear this - I didn't have all that much interaction with Ken on these boards, but his posts were always worth reading.
I was looking back at his Easter sermon thread and at the time I didn't know that he was ill; now I realise what a brave thing it must have been for him to do.
for his soul, and for Persephone, Busyknitter and all who knew and loved him.
Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him.

After a hiatus from the Ship (not for any bad reason, just other business) I have just now checked in to see what is happening, and am floored by this news. What an utter total shock. To say how very very sad seems so inadequate. Ken's posts exemplified the best of what is special about the Ship.
I never met you face to face, Ken, but thanks for the interesting and thought-provoking posts. Rest in peace and rise in glory, Ken.

I have been away for a few days. Only just noticed this thread. It was the Hell-thread that sent me in the right direction.
There are no words for moments like this but I think the length of this thread in just 3 days shows the world what we all thought of Ken.

I never met ken in Real Life. My loss. I suspect that I would have greatly enjoyed knowing him.

So sad. When I first found the ship I read his posts with delight and at one point responded with 'Ken for Prime Minister'. His moral authority, wisdom and wit - and his SE London affiliation would have transformed the entire political, moral and cultural landscape. He is one of the saints of heaven. RIP

Been away from the Ship for a few weeks very busy with RL, so it has been a real shock to find this thread. Ken and I crossed swords on a few occasions, but he was certainly someone whose views and extensive knowledge I respected.
I'm surprised to find out how moved I am by the news - he will be missed a great deal. I never met him in RL, but in God's mercy I hope that we shall meet in the life of the world to come.
My thoughts and condolences to his family. Angus

My father's funeral will be at 12pm on Friday June 13th, at St John's Church (addresses at the end). After the service, some will proceed to the burial at Brockley Cemetery, while others will stay at the church for tea and such. We'll all reconvene at the Rising Sun (dad's local of twenty-five years, down the hill from the church) for the kind of wake he would have wanted - lots of beer, lots of celebration, and lots of remembrance. Here are some other things you might want to know:
- My dad hated cut flowers; he called them "murdered plants". As such, in lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to St John's Church - an institution to which he was devoted for a quarter of a century.
- Everyone is welcome to come to the funeral service. If you only knew him online but would quite like to come, come. If you'd want to be there but would feel more comfortable accompanied by (for example) your partner who is someone my dad never met, bring them.
- Everyone is also welcome at the burial, but space will be a little limited - we will after all be at the graveside. As such, some of you may wish to stay behind and rejoin the family and close friends at the pub afterwards.
- Even if you can't take time off work for the funeral (or otherwise can't be there), we'd love you to consider coming to the wake in the pub that evening anyway. After all, it's a Friday night - it's what he would have wanted!
- If you'd like to visit him in the Chapel of Rest prior to the funeral, you're very welcome to - please ask me for details of how to do this and I will get them to you.
St John's can be found at: St John’s Church, St John’s Vale, SE8 4EA The Rising Sun is: 120 Loampit Hill, SE13 7SN
Despite the confusingly different addresses, the two are actually on the same road as each other - ten minutes walk in a straight line downhill!
Any questions, please just ask.

I went looking to see if one could donate to St. John's online, and unless I'm missing it, it doesn't appear so. for those in the know, if a donation was sent to St John’s Church, St John’s Vale, London, UK SE8 4EA would it get there? I don't know if that's a full mailing address over there.

Yes, it should get there with that address. Can I just check (Persephone?) what the exact payee would be on the cheque? Not sure if the bank would accept 'St John's church' or if it needs to be something else. Thank you x

If you want to know how best to make a donation then how to contact the church can be found on this webpage and yes that is its full postal address.
I think, the clerics will fast learn why it is a good idea to have the treasurers email on the website.
