( copied and slightly edited from the beginning of the 2007 thread)

As promised on the current thread, it is time to start thinking about people who you think might well, er.....DIE (basically) during 2008. You don't have to post your list yet, but if you do not post it before 11:59 on 31st December 2008 (GMT) you will be unable to take any further part in the contest. Have fun, think carefully and read the rules below.

1. You must pick 13 well-known people (the definition of well-known is that their deaths will be reported by at least one major outlet. Examples: The Guardian, CNN, IMDB, CNNSI) whom you think will shuffle off this mortal coil in 2009. That is, starting from 00:01 am (GMT) on January 1st 2009

2. Points are awarded according to the following formula: the celebrity's age at the time of death subtracted from 100. For example, if the person you choose dies at the age of 67, you will earn 33 points.

3. You earn 50 bonus points if the death occurs in such a way as to clearly prove the existence of God (e.g., some doofus dies from burns after trying to torch a c****h or something).

4. You cannot choose anyone under the age of 18.

5. You can choose an inmate scheduled to be executed, but you only earn points if the person dies by some means other than the state-sponsored execution. E.g., a shiv in the stomach counts, lethal injection does not.

6. You are disqualified if you contribute in any way to the death of one of your chosen candidates, with the exception of police officers and members of the armed services who kill someone in the line of duty.

7. All entries must be submitted on this thread no later than 23.59 GMT 31st December 2008. No entries will be accepted after this time. You may however make changes to your list any time before 23.59 31st December 2008, but only if someone pops their clogs before the beginning of the year. (or you've put someone in twice)

There are also a couple of extraneous categories:

Inside Track with the Grim Reaper Award: person who picks the first death of 2009.

Quantity Not Quality Award: person who picks the most people who croak in 2009, regardless of their points value.

This is now the 6th time we have done this, and each time someone questions the merits of what we are doing. Please bear in mind:

* This is only a game
* These are not death "Wish Lists" - You choose who you think might die. It's not my fault if that is influenced by who you want to die.
* The Circus is the place for games, not discussion, so debating the right/wrong of what we are doing should be done somewhere else

Have fun, and remember to post your selection.

(those of you who are eagle-eyed about the times posted might wonder what happens to someone who dies exactly on the stroke of midnight between 2008 and 2009 - I say that's so unlikely that they should count for both years.)

My list for this year contains many names from last year but I've changed a few just because I felt like it.

1. Murdoch of Twisted News Corp.

2. General Than Shwe, leader of the military government in Burma.

3. L K Advani - Indian politician and promoter of hatred and communal violence.

4. Thatcher, the truly appalling.

5. Jyoti Basu - Bengali communist politician and former Chief Minister.

6. Jean Marie LePen, French politician and promoter of hatred and communal violence.

7. Robert Mugabe, the ruination of Zimbabwe.

8. Bal Thackeray - another promoter of hatred and communal violence in India, and admirer of Hitler.

9. Pat Robertson - alleged Christian.

10. Ian Paisley - another alleged Christian and promoter of hatred and communal violence in Ireland this time.

11. John McCain - I reckon that the election campaign did nothing to add to his health.

12. Gerry Adams - just to be fair.

13. Philip Mountbatten, of Greece, Denmark and Britain.

Mine are all still alive too, and look to continue that way, Gawd bless 'em.

So a whole new strategy this time:

1.Patrick Swazye, actor
2.Kelsey Grammer, actor
3.Liz Dawn, actor (in British soap Coronation Street)
4.Elizabeth Taylor, actor
5.Wendy Richards, actor (in British soap Eastenders)
6.Zsa Zsa Gabor, actor
7.Seve Ballesteros, golfer
8.Russell Watson, singer
9.George O’Dowd, aka Boy George, singer
10.Paul O’Grady, television presenter
11.Edward ‘Ted’ Kennedy, politician
12.John Prescott, politician
13.Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

Good luck to them and bad luck to me ...

With a little bit of recycling from my 2008 list:

1. Rev. Billy Graham
2. Joanne Woodward (Because she misses Paul?)
3. Lindsay Lohan
4. Kirk Douglas
5. Britney Spears
6. Mike Tyson
7. Pete Doherty
8. Eddie Van Halen
9. Robert Downey Jr.
10. Patrick Swayze
11. Marilyn Manson
12. Betty Ford
13. Jackie Cooper even though he's not worth many points anymore. [Biased]

Consider this as another gift of life to those on my list, since, like others posting, mine seem to stay alive! [Big Grin]

I think that one from my last year's list (Fidel Castro) is already dead, so I took him off this year's list.

I'm going with pretty much the same list as last year ... all still alive ... I added Amy Winehouse to improve my chances. My theory, as always, is that the death of even one fast-living young celeb will get me tons of points, or conversely that putting them on my list will confer a magical immunity to the perils of celeb life ... either way good.

1. Paris Hilton
2. Lindsay Lohan
3. Jessica Simpson
4. Amy Winehouse
5. Mary-Kate Olsen
6. Ashley Olsen
7. Nicole Ritchie
8. Brad Pitt
9. Angelina Jolie
10. Jennifer Aniston
11. Vince Vaughan
12. Owen Wilson
13. Orlando Bloom

Given that I believe I'm currently pointless (stop sniggering at the back...) I shall adopt a slightly different tactic, and name a thirteen of people I'd rather like to stay about. So if my luck carries on... so will theirs! If it doesn’t, a few will score decent points!

1. Marcus Trescothick
2. Patrick MacNee
3. Diana Rigg
4. Honor Blackman
5. Sir Patrick Moore
6. Imran Khan
7. Peter O’Toole
8. Eric Sykes
9. Dennis Norden
10. Mick Aston
11. Francis Pryor
12. Jerry Lee Lewis (Holy cow – he is Jimmy Swaggart’s cousin! What a one to have as your weird relation!)
13. Margaret Gelling

I’ll break the theme for my sub, in case anyone is ungracious enough to do a Benazir Bhutto on me again.

14. Mugabe.

You can probably read rather a lot into me from those choices...

Following my cancer themed list of 2007, and my super-centenarian list of 2008, I a going left field in 2009 with an Are You Being Served? list. Don't ask me why, it's just a hunch.

1) Mollie Sugden
2) Wendy Richards
3) Frank Thornton
4) Nicholas Smith
5) Trevor Bannister
6) Penny Irving
7) Mike Berry
8) Candy Davis
9) Fleur Bennett
10) Shirley Cheriton
11) David Croft
12) Jeremy Lloyd
13) Harold Snoad

One or two were marginal characters or only in the Are You Being Served Again? spin off series, but the Grim Reaper has taken several of the original cast in recent years.

Cheers,

Uriel.

Following a spectacularly unsuccessful 2008, I am considerably revising my list.

A brief note before I start: given my form at this game to date, I have decided that if I really, really want Robert Mugabe to die what I need to do is take him off my list. He will then croak on purpose because I have nothing to gain from it. This is so clearly in the overwhelming best interest of humanity that I have decided to do the decent thing and remove him from the list. I am willing to make the sacrifice and forego the points in order to rid humankind of this bloody dictator. (Don't forget to thank me when he kicks the bucket [Two face] )

So onwards with the selection:

1) Kim Jong Il -my team has an exciting new opportunity for a tyranical despot (see note above). Sick with it
2) Fidel Castro -sick and also quite despotic
3) Ariel Sharon -they have to turn him off one of these days
4) Beitullah Mehsoud -head honcho of the Pakistani Taleban
5) Ben Johnson -Olympic cheat and famous anabolic steroid abuser (bad for the heart)
6) Margaret Thatcher -if I take her off the list she'll die to spite me
7) Michael Jackson -falling apart at the seams
8) Liz Taylor -sick
9) Peter Stringfellow -he's a corpse already, he just hasn't stopped moving about
10) Ted Kennedy -sick
11) Joseph Kabila -assassination risk
12) Jimmy Saville -old and a smoker
13) Brian Wilson -he of the Beach Boys. Looking in a bad way last time I saw him

I'm also starting from the point that, on the past two years showing, anyone I choose lives for an extra year, so I've given up on Margaret Thatcher and Robert Mugabe. This year I've chosen people who I'd quite like to live and have the odds stacked against them.

  1. Tony Hart
  2. Jade Goody
  3. Patrick Swayze
  4. Elizabeth Taylor
  5. Farrah Fawcett
  6. Lindsay Lohan (fell off the wagon late this year)
  7. Kerry Katona
  8. Paul Gascoigne
  9. Richard Attenborough (December hospital stay)
  10. Anthony Kiedis (organ failure following drug abuse - Red Hot Chilli Pepper singer)
  11. Wendy Richard
  12. Mindy McCready (country singer)
  13. Meatloaf (Marvin Lee Aday)

In no particular order:

1. The Duke of Edinburgh
2. Margaret Thatcher
3. Robert Mugabe (just do this one thing for your country)
4. Wendy Richard
5. Malcolm Fraser (sanctimonious windbag and a former Prime Minister of Australia)
6. Gough Whitlam (ditto)
7. Kate McCann
8. Nigella Lawson (high possibility of drowning in a vat of double cream)
9. Sarah Palin ('cos I like moose more than gun-toting soccer 'moms')
10. Gary Glitter
11. Pope Bendict XVI
12. Ian Brady (reunited with Myra Hindley)
13. Dick Cheney (he's been involved in one hunting accident already...)

I've probably just guaranteed all of them another year of life. On the other hand, some might already be dead and just refusing to lie down.

It looks like last year's list bestowed the gift of life on these folks, but they can't go on forever. So with a few slight modifications:

1.Pat Robertson
2.Billy Graham
3.Stephen Hawking
4.Muhammad Ali
5.Fidel Castro
6.Amy Winehouse in place of Britney Spears who seems to be improving
7.Michael J. Fox
8.Terry Pratchett
9.Dick Clark
10.Elizabeth Taylor
11.Michael Jackson
12.Elizabeth Edwards
13.Ariel (I'm not dead yet) Sharon
