For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken. NIV

I had never thought of this before but all these years I have been wondering why Jesus said this or that, or what the heck does Jesus mean, what’s he trying to tell me.

Maybe my question would more accurately be, “What is the Father saying here?”

Perhaps a little more context here will be useful. Here's the full quotation from Jesus (John 12: 44-50) .
quote:
Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

“If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day. For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”

A couple of other bits of context: Note that this takes place early in Holy Week. Also, in the setting, John comments that many Jews believe in Jesus but are afraid to say so.

Perhaps that will help get this started?

Sounds like Jesus is claiming divine authority for what he says. He already had a reputation for speaking with authority and not as the teachers of the Law.

Also, as Jesus is the Prophet that was promised to Moses and the people, he will indeed speak from God:

"I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him." Deuteronomy 18 v 18
