Rasputin was of course Boney M (who specialised in history lessons to a catchy beat).

Mention of Russians takes me to:

Old Man River that Old Man River
he must know something but he don't say nothing,
That Old Man River, he just keeps rolling along.
You and me, we sweat and strain,
Bodies all aching and wracked with pain:
"Tote that barge, lift that bale";
Get a little drunk and you land in jail.
I'm so weary and sick of trying.
And Old Man River, he just keeps rolling along.

Paul Robeson in Showboat

That song always reminds me of Barry Manilow's 'Mandy'. They're both about a man who realises that he's abandoned a good, loving and devoted woman for the sake of what? A bittersweet, hollow freedom?

Only one obvious answer:
MONEY, MONEY, MONEY

ABBA .

Now I have a request which has nothing to do with the thread.
Does anyone out there know the words to what I call the Geometry song, which I used to sing but can now only remember fragments. Each verse refers to a geometrical figure:- a circle, a square, a rectangle and finishes with a triangle. In that order The last verse[ the triangle] goes something like this:
couple of lines, then :
Triangular the relationship, that now has ceased to be:
Triangular the garment thin, which fastens with a safety pin,
The prize I had no wish to win , a lasing memory,
My true love gave to me

Love is a many splendoured thing

Not from The King and I or even by Rodgers and Hammerstein. It's the title song from Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing -- with music by Sammy Fain and lyrics by Paul Francis Webster.
