On another thread, the cry went up that we don't have nearly enough Old Testament based hymns. It was suggested that one might begin with the line "By all the saints in warfare . . ."

So here's the game:

  • Each player adds one line to the hymn "By all the saints in warfare."
  • Each stanza consists of four lines: iambic tetrameter, iambic trimeter, iambic tetrameter, iambic trimeter.
  • The rhyming scheme is ABAB.
  • Incorporate as many Old Testament figures into the hymn as possible -- the obscurer, the merrier.
  • The more stilted the language and forced the rhyme, the better.
  • The sentiment must be theologically correct.

So here goes. The first stanza is done for you. The next player will add a sixth line to the fifth, thus expanding the next stanza.

By all the saints in warfare proved,
By all the holy ones,
The Father to compassion moved
From dawn to setting suns.

Stout Jonah in beast's belly dwelt

Might be good to summarize the hymn to date:

By all the saints in warfare proved,
By all the holy ones,
The Father to compassion moved
From dawn to setting suns.

Stout Jonah in beast's belly dwelt
Till spewed into the sea.
After three days he really smelt
and desperate for a pee.

Talking of smells, on dungheap, Job
Bewailed his fallen state.
While Joseph, with his couture robe
In Egypt put on weight.

Hosea meanwhile hung his head
While muttering "We're all doomed!"
Elijah, fearing Ahab, fled
And Jezebel she fumed.

[New stanza]

What, Jephthah did his daughter smite?

Hey, I'll take it. It rhymes anyway.

Might be good to summarize once again. Then you can begin a new stanza.

(The tune, by the way, is St Anne -- what else?)

By all the saints in warfare proved,
By all the holy ones,
The Father to compassion moved
From dawn to setting suns.

Stout Jonah in beast's belly dwelt
Till spewed into the sea.
After three days he really smelt
and desperate for a pee.

Talking of smells, on dungheap, Job
Bewailed his fallen state.
While Joseph, with his couture robe
In Egypt put on weight.

Hosea meanwhile hung his head
While muttering "We're all doomed!"
Elijah, fearing Ahab, fled
And Jezebel she fumed.

What, Jephthah did his daughter smite?
What evil had she done?
She asked her father that she might
Have one more night of fun.

"Of FUN?" he roared with mighty voice,
"All right then - sling your 'ook."
And he did to the Lord rejoice,
'Tis in the holy book.

O Sodom, doom'd thou art. Shall I
O'er you shed a tear,
Or cast into deepest valley
Forever left in fear?

Melchizedek, of priestly hue,
Popped down the local shop,
Picked up some wine, a loaf or two,
And to his knees did drop.

"Write this," quoth he, "in that there book:"
Tell all the tale of Zephaniah,
who at Jerusalem cocked a snook.
[sorry, I thought we were on the next stanza.]
