This month we have 3 items for our delctation and delight.
1. Michael Morpurgo, The Best Christmas Present in the World,
2. Michael Foreman, War Game
3. Carol Ann Duffy's poem The Christmas Truce

2 are books and 1 is a poem; you can read them all or just one.
I suggest the discussion starts in a couple of weeks time, say 16th December.

Please post if you are in.

RL has overtaken me, so though I intend to read this month's suggestions, please don't count on me to lead any discussion.
Sorry!
Having said that, only 3 of us this month?

I am taking the day off Monday: shall contact the local library to see if any or all of these publications are available. Zeke can check out the university library where she has borrowing privileges on Wednesday when she'll be in that neighbourhood.

I've read all 3 books this morning and am very moved.

I also watched This again.

My Dad served in the Second World War. He died last week. He was instrumental in setting up his local twinning association with a town in Germany. His host family became firm friends with us and have sent moving tributes.
He also got to know a French family well and they've sent a beautiful email this morning. Just saying where I'm coming from...

Carol Ann Duffy, The Christmas Truce is the most piercing of the 3, describing beauty in horror. The poetry enhances the human story. The illustrations are simple but very effective.

Michael Morpurgo ,The Best Christmas Present in the World - I like this quote,
"In the middle of the war we were making peace". This book is
more child friendly. The story is told of a letter found in an old desk telling the story of that night. It's made very moving by the last part when the letter finder tracks down the elderly and confused soldier's widow.

Michael Foreman ,War Game is more informative , including reproductions of conscription posters.
Its the story of a young soldier, Will from Suffolk.
I like the line "The clock of death had stopped ticking" and found the book detailed and moving.
Please forgive the brevity of my notes.
