Has anyone been to a Future Cinema event?
Macarius and I are going to Casablanca next week. We're looking forward to it but not quite sure what to expect.
We have a table booked at Rick's and have our identity cards as refugees wanting to get into America - Macarius is just putting our photos on them (I gave up on 40's Glamour in the end and went for Distressed Peasant).
I already had a war time dress and have bought a hat and tried out the hair and make up (hence the Distressed Peasant look). Macarius has bought a 1940's white DJ.
Now, just need to learn the words to the Marsellaise...

Will they have one in my hometown, LA? I am just a few hours away and could easily get there if it was in the summer. I saw Casablanca on campus when I was at Cal Berkeley in '72...

I don't know but if they do, go along. We had the most wonderful time - the event was held in a restored art deco cinema, made into an event space. It was dressed up as Rick's cafe where we ate, drank, danced to 1940's music and chatted - every so often a group of actors played a scene from the film. We sang 'Knock of Wood' and the Marsellaise. We could have gambled in the casino with the Vichy francs that some people were given.
Then, later on, a screen was let down from the ceiling and the film played.
Altogether wonderful!!!

Super frustrating that I can't find American events of this nature. Gosh, it seems the kind of thing that would totally take off in Northern California.

Seems as if Future Cinema has just been insulted.

Actually I was thinking of the kind of arsty-creative stuff that is promoted in this area. Especially in the more rural places up north, where people have no city to party in.
San Francisco and the North Bay have particularly strong film geek* communities, dating back to the silent film times and reaching into the days of Zoetrope, Lucasarts, the Letterman center. There is a huge film festival in Marin every year. Future Cinema would take off like a rocket around there. Just needs someone to start it.
*I say this knowing we on SOF are geeks of one form or another, so I wave my film geek flag high. [ 20. March 2013, 21:22: Message edited by: Kelly Alves ]
