It is also used to introduce a summary of a long posting, with an acknowledgement that some people are too lazy/time-constrained/stupid to read and follow the full argument.

So asomeone might do:

[long detailed theological explanation of transubstantiation]

tl;dr: Catholics believe the bread becomes Jesus body, and the blood becomes his blood.

Anyone responding to the summary, of course, will be mercilessly ridiculed. But for those who want to just know what is being said, as part of the discussion or to know whether to read the rest, it is a quick introduction, with the acknowledgement that it is not doing justice to the argument.
