I started a discussion that I posted in Purgatory [details omitted]...I think I had gotten at least one reply and then today I noticed the entire thread is missing. Too controversial? Did I break some commandments?

The thread was closed due to caution on the part of the Purg Hosts about advice which may have legal as well as social implications.
After an Admin-level review it was decided that as the thread involved a specific incident (the details of which we couldn't verify) and was drawing legal advice, it would be removed from the public boards.
Please do not try to reopen the discussion.

Did this happen without informing the thread opener? I am not wanting to pick a fight, and I am sure that the decision was right, but it seems rude at the least not to have informed The5thMary that the thread was deleted.

Nobody had said anything about the locked thread, which had been locked for a full day at that point, so we figured nobody was interested anymore. In any case, we had to act fast.
In fact, no offense, Mary, I am going to edit your OP as even that, in some US states, might put you in a position of needing to answer questions.
In the future, if you have a question of that nature, frame it as a hypothetical.
