Sighted my first of the season at Loch Lomond. BTW, that location has been used before, is it a resort or some other facility?

I've never won anything. But I'm looking - and I just spotted an "ordinary" one by Loch Lomond and a GOLD one at St. Andrew's. *It did a doo-doo on the golf course, though*

And I'm listening to St. Andrew's Day-themed music on R3.

If you read the bit on the right hand side of the screen it has at the bottom a link to the providers of the webcam. In this case Loch Lomond Shores Stores. The cameras depend on who the Scotsman can persuade to allow them to stream the cameras.

Jengie

p.s. this is one of the cases where the Scotsman image is degraded, and if you look at the website you get a far better view.

Oh there is slightly misleading information on Arbroath, the council hosting that webcam is Angus not Aberdeen.

A big one sitting on the roof of a boat at Linlithgow.

A thought: can Haggii swim? Or do they just go round in circles before drowning?

I would assume they do swim, coming from the same genetic pool as the duck billed platypus. But, as you suggest, the disparity in leg length must be a severe disadvantage.

BT; the animal is a Haggis, not a *Haggius. The plural is therefore Haggises or Hagges. Not *Haggii, which is very nearly as annoying as the faux-plural *Virii for viruses.

Excuse me, but "The Scotsman" itself, in its list of "Ten things you never knew about Haggis", states categorically:

"The correct plural of haggis is haggii, although under certain grammatical circumstances it can be haggises or even “wee yins”. The name Haggii comes from the Latin for “harried ones”".

In fact, it is down as Fact No.1 - I think that is definitive. [Big Grin]

Okay, we're settling this now: "haggis" would be a 3rd declension neuter noun (assuming it's not a crystalized form of the genitive of the original "haggus," which seems unlikely); therefore, one could naively assume the plural would end in -es. However, this leads to "haggies," which, given that diphthong in the final syllable, just doesn't sound right—so I'm guessing that it's actually more likely to be "haggites," with the "t" inserted between vowels, but suppressed when not needed.

Were it a neuter noun, the plural would be *hagga, assuming the stem is hagg- or possibly *haggia, assuming a stem haggi-. 3rd Declension nouns in -is are generally masc or fem, so would take a nom. pl. in -es.

Haggites would be possible; the issue could be resolved by finding an example of the genitive plural in the literature - *haggium would imply the noun does not insert a syllable; *haggum that it does.

I don't care what The Scotsman says - Latin literacy these days is atrocious and your citation, BT, shows just how poor it is. Latin plurals in -ii invariably derive from Nom. Sings in -ius.

It cannot be a fossilised genitive as a putative form *Haggus would form a genetive in -i, identical in form to the Nom. Pl. -is would be the Gen. sing. of 3rd Dec Haggis - identical in form with the Nom. Sing. of course.

If you're looking for Latin declension, I'd conjecture that haggis follows the same pattern as tigris. In this case, the plural can be either hagges or haggides.

KLB: see, you're assuming Latin remained "pure," under Classical rules; however, with the influence of the vernacular in later Latin, we see irregular forms of crystallization and some flex in the rules of declension to reflect the language understanded by the people, especially in words of local use or origin, such as "haggis." As the word/animal is particularly Scottish (and as the Romans never successfully occupied the native territory of haggides, thus indicating that classical Latin was never widely spoken there—while the presence of monasteries in even the most remote parts of the country seems to indicate that later Latins were), it seems that we ought to retain some trace of the vernacular and its irregular rules

I'd say "haggides" would be a reasonable compromise under most circumstances, and I may even have used it myself; however, I'm still not happy about you being reasonable. Your proposal is acceptable for the moment—until I come up with a better idea and make up some reason why everyone who doesn't do it like me is wrong.

If anyone is interested, this is what some of the shops you can see in Inverurie look like from the inside.

It's a great place for shopping; hardly any multiples, most of the shops are still family firms.

The Cairngorms camera is back but it's still not live - therefore pointless as a webcam.

Perhaps it's just me but the webcams seem to be a bit dull this year. I think it's because there isn't one really lively place. Perhaps it's the economic situation - austerity and all that.

I've nabbed about 35 haggis so far (I think the plural is like sheep - i.e one sheep, two sheep, 374 sheep) but my heart's not in it.

Arbroath is beautiful - especially when it's sunny and Stonehaven was as well when it was standing in for Cairngorm. Banchory looks cramped - I think that the webcam they've fed from is 16:9 and Haggis-cams are 4:3. I miss the Glasgow street fair they used to have.

Last year the Inverurie webcam moved right to left over three views from one webcam. This year it seems to be fixed on the centre view. This shows a small car park, and the triangle of ground in the mifddle of the square, which contains the war memorial and Christmas tree, but not much movement of people. It makes Inverurie, which is a busy and prosperous wee town, look much quieter than it actually is.

Lots of quite big haggises, many not yellow ones. And I do enjoy seeing lots of the places in Scotland, and I'm pleased they show them in different places often.
