Came across this research this week.

How much better does spending your cash on someone else make you feel than spending it on yourself?

My Father in law came across this research in some new age self help book he was reading when he was going through a divorce about a decade ago.

He sold his house and gave us 50 grand.

I honestly don't know if it made him feel better.

Telling my husband that "that's all you get from me ever" after it probably didn't help tho. [Disappointed]

Research shows helping others in general is good for your mental health and well-being. I assume giving away money (if you can afford it) would be part of it.

I love being generous, having people round for meals, buying presents etc.

I have to reign these impulses in quite a lot 'tho as my husband loves being frugal! So in order to be kind to him I have to strike a careful balance.

We have family coming round for lunch tomorrow - I would buy lots of different juices and drinks to offer them. My husband doesn't 'get' this at all and would simply have apple juice and water on the table. I like doing lots of cakes and puds too. I don't eat any of them myself as I'm on a low carb diet.

It depends how much you've got.

You know what, Boogie? The more I read your posts and look at the pictures of your handsome family, the more I like you! Awww, aren't I gushy? Okay, back on topic! [Biased]

All things in moderation, of course, but I have found that giving to others does give me greater joy than buying for myself. It is part of why I love Christmas--one of the times that I can give to others without them wondering if I have an ulterior motive. One of my happiest memories is buying a winter coat and gloves for a new mother whose own coat was recently stolen and who was barely keeping a roof over her head as it was. I arranged for the gift to be made anonymously (although in later years I think she figured out where it came from).

I have not heard or read the word 'dosh' for many a decade.

Thanks for the nostalgia trip.

There are times when it makes me feel like Hell. Can't give enough to solve the problem. Can't stop or it gets worse. Have to give just enough; too much and it gets wasted. Almost everyone else has given up hope, given up helping. I cannot bear to.
When I gave and walked away, yes, it gave a warm glow. I cannot walk away from this one.

My niece has very little (even less since she had the twins) but she loves giving.

So she saves empty jars and makes all sorts of clever pickles and preserves from the veg she grows.

We visit 3rd world countries - people who have nothing - and yet they give. It humbles me as I give out of plenty, they give out of poverty.

One example is a poor shanty community up on a hill in Mexico. To our eyes they could hardly be poorer. Yet, every Sunday, they travel two hours to a remote Indian community to take essential stuff to them. Amazing gernerosity.

Give generously, BUT also make sensible provision for yourself. There's one amazing but rather simple woman at church who takes everything literally, including the injunction to sell all she has and give everything away. Trouble is, when she does this, she ends up needing to be rescued by others who have to give her supplies to aid her basic needs. Again. And again. And again.

Giving away things surplus to your needs is fine, but, beyond that, perhaps people need some basic assistance in how to adequately supply their own needs.

Amazing what you find out on these boards [Smile] . Might have been better posting this one in heaven. I'll leave the Mods to decide if they want to re-post the thread to a different audience.
