Well, I'm nicely geared up for the new series. It's seemed like a long wait. So here's a thread for feedback and reactions. I've read all the books now, so I'm well prepared for the final departures of some of the heroes and villains!

I've not seen any of these, but (very) oddly a friend from Belfast finds herself a makeup artist on the set. When we met at Christmas, she showed us her portfolio of decomposing corpses, nasty wounds etc etc...

Allied to this - read (almost all) the books, not seen any of the TV series. But a journo from Christian Today wants to interview me on my opinions about it.
This should be good.

I've read the first two books and am anticipating some more for summer holiday reading. I won't spend too long on this thread as no doubt spoilers will abound. before I go how many TV series cover those two books? Or is the link not linear?

I think it's been roughly true that each season covers the same territory as one of the books so far (so, we're at the end of season 3 and I think that puts us in about the same place, plotwise, as we are at the end of Book 3) but I also think that's going to change with season 4 because Book 4 is where GRRM started playing around with his plotlines, dividing up the stories between books 4 & 5.

His screenplay writing is catching up with his book writing - I reckon it won't be long before he writes the screenplay first!

Apparently he's told the show's producers how he plans to end the series, in case he dies before he finishes writing the books.

Sky Atlantic. Normally Monday 9pm in the UK but the first episode of season 4 was shown at 2am today (Monday) to coincide with the US screening. Well worth the wait. My, how the dragons have grown!

... and another one bites the dust. The emetic Joffrey is no more, hooray. Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy) has morphed into a very convincing Reek, and Tyrion goes into his darkest crisis tunnel so far. I was impressed with Episode 2.

And I write as one who has only seen up to the end of Season 2 so far. I will enjoy Season 3 so much more knowing that that sadistic little twat gets his comeuppance in the end

Well, George R R Martin seems to have this thing about wedding receptions, as you'll discover in Season 3, Marvin.
Season 4 is building nicely. Interesting how the script writers are fashioning the sequence of events for dramatic effect. Some crackling exchanges involving Charles Dance, whose quietly menacing portrayal of Tywin Lannister is for me one of the highlights of the transfer to TV.

Wow! Just caught up after the hols. Episode 8 is a stunner! And (having read the books) another dramatic denouement to follow before the end of this season. Peter Dinklage continues to impress as Tyrion and Sophie Turner's development of Sansa Stark becomes ever more interesting. Plus, plus ..
Season 4 has I think raised the bar even higher. YMMV!

I found that Oberyn Martell was a good example of a character (Jorah Mormont, also on display in this episode, was another) who didn't really grab my attention in the books, but who was so brilliantly portrayed by the actor in the TV series that I got completely caught up in his story. The worst part of this of course is that a death that didn't really bother me when I read it in the books was devastating when it happened on TV.

Yes, I found his character very interesting, challenging the morality of the Lannisters on every level. I have given up on the books so I was mildly annoyed by his gory demise. I think I am suffering from character death fatigue, I have stopped investing any hope in any of the characters, I just want to see them all die now.

Watched episodes 9 and 10 back to back last night. On holiday when episode 9 was broadcast. Very satisfying to see them one after the other.
Some departures from the books this series, but I think season 4 has been excellent.
I found the episode 9 battle to be stunning. Actually, all episode 9's have been good. Ned's trial and shocking beheading, the Blackwater battles, the infamous Red Wedding, have been season highlighta, and the Watchers on the Wall was no exception.
Episode 10 was a juicy ending; dragons locked up, an amazing encounter and fight between Brienne and the Hound (not in the book but really worked), Bran and the truly scary Wights, and of course Tyrion the double slayer. Arya sailing away was a great final scene. Lots of new themes opened up there.
Roll on Season 5! Apparently, they are still working on the script and scenes, trying to balance ambition and cost. Season 4 must have cost an arm and a leg, but from my POV very well worth it. [ 17. June 2014, 06:36: Message edited by: Barnabas62 ]

I watched episode 10 on the big screen at the theatre. I think every episode of this series would hold up well to being watched on a theatre screen, which you can't say about most TV shows. I didn't really like the Brienne/Hound fight because a) I don't like watching fights when they stop being cool swordplay and people start hitting each other, because it's just too graphic for me, and b) I didn't really "get" Sandor's motivation -- why he would fight for Arya when there's nothing to be gained by continuing to travel with her. Other than that I thought the episode was great. It's the only time Stannis has ever looked like a king to me.

I think the TV makers were conveying that the Hound had a heart, so would protect Arya rather than be 'sell-swordish'. A redeeming feature! Brienne had the wrong sword to be trusted. But it was a bit far away from George R R's intentions.
I think the series may win some awards this year. Looks like ratings in the US have been pretty stellar, and there has been a good deal of critical acclaim as well.
