Reading the report on San Miguel reminded me of my trip to New Mexico just this past September. My wife and I and another couple went to Taos (which is a couple hundred miles north of Socorro) and among other activities visited the mission church at Taos Pueblo. The Taos church is also built of adobe and was rebuilt after the US Army shelled the original church in 1847 to put down a rebellion by the native Taos people. If any shipmates would like to take a look at Taos and other historic churches in New Mexico, here are a couple good links:

Link to San Miguel report.

Reading this report, it occurred to me that this is not the only church of historical interest where services are held not in the historic building, but rather in an ancillary building. I know the community, not the building, is the actual church, but there's something that a well-designed, well-preserved labor of love from the past adds to the worship experience that a metal chair on a gymnasium floor cannot.
