8 October is National Poetry Day, so herewith a collective (I hope) poem on the theme of nations - your own, other people's, Six (rugby fans only), First (if Canadian) - you get the idea.

Four lines, rhyming abab, the first line of each stanza to incorporate as much of the last line of the previous as possible. (Just the last word is admissible, but more gain you Poetic Points).

What makes a Scot? For me, the words are bridges
Here I can skelp, pauchle, dander, mitch and blether
Be drookit when it's driech, be fashed by midges.
I ken the tongue, and can thole the weather

Of an ancient land, my own, my love, my – well!
On this side of The Wall we underplay
The beauty of our land, and like to tell
Only of the weather’s mood all day.

The weather’s mood all day is bright,
Sea breezes bringing spice and passion
To an ancient land, bathed in light
Full of music, chatter, coffee, fashion.

Presto presto, do your very besto
Sample the sauerkraut, Schwarzbier, wurst,
Limburger, Hamburger, pasta with pesto
Lebkuchen and strudel till you're ready to burst.

Cheer till you're ready to burst, Wa-ales,
Coal, slate and gold, land changing mines,
Eisteddfods and rugby, hills and vales,
Celebrate in home-grown beer and wines

And wines, so many wines, from those vines
That stripe the hills in long green lines
Bluebell blue the jacaranda twines
Above red dirt, dark diamond mines.
