Lazy Day Political Research. Leaders who won an overall majority in their own right, typed in capitals. Conservative Party leaders since 1945: CHURCHILL, EDEN, MACMILLAN, Douglas-Home, HEATH, THATCHER, MAJOR, Hague, Duncan-Smith, Howard, CAMERON, May. 'Success Rate' = 7 out of 12 = 58%. Labour Party leaders since 1945 (not including temporary acting leaders): ATLEE, Gaitskell, WILSON, Callaghan, Foot, Kinnock, Smith, BLAIR, Brown, Milliband, Corbyn. 'Success Rate' = 3 out of 11 = 27%. Liberal Party Leaders since 1945: Sinclair, Davies, Grimmond, Thorpe, Steel, Steel/ Owen/ Maclennan, Ashdown, Kennedy, Campbell, Clegg, Farron. 'Success Rate' = 0 out of 11 = 0%. It is for a bigger brain than mine to discern whether there are common characteristics between the names typed in capitals (aside from elements of chance, 'being in the right place at the right time' or personal privilege) which gave them their success [and similarly for the non-capitals ..].
