2011 was a good year for celebrity deaths: Dictators, rock stars, and actors; those loved, hated, and tolerated; the old, young, and in-between. The question is, is there any way that 2012 can top it? Well, let's find out: I am pleased to announce the 2012 Ship of Fools Celebrity Death Pool.

This OP is largely the same as last year, so if you're an old hand at this game there won't be any surprises. If you've not partaken of this seasonal delight in the past, then please read the introduction and rules below.

For the uninitiated, the gist of it is that you have to pick who is going to die in the next calendar year. If one of your choices does pop their clogs, you are awarded points as explained below. The winner is the person with the most points. The deadline for posting your list is the end of this year (which we shall take to be 23.59 EST on December 31st, 2011) and if you miss this deadline you will not be able to take any further part.

So, have fun, think carefully, and read the rules below!
  1. You must pick 13 well-known people whom you think will shuffle off this mortal coil in 2012. That is, starting from 00.01 EST on January 1st 2012 and ending at 23.59 EST on December 31st 2012.
  2. The definition of well-known is that their deaths will be reported by at least one major news outlet. Examples outlets include (but are not limited to) The Guardian, CNN, IMDB, Al Jezeera, or the Church Times(!).
  3. All selections must be real people: No fictional characters, please.
  4. Points are awarded according to the following formula: 100 minus the celebrity's age at the time of death. For example, if the person you choose dies at the age of 67, you will earn 33 points.
  5. You earn 50 bonus points if the death occurs in such a way as to clearly prove the existence of God (for example, if some doofus dies from burns after trying to torch a church).
  6. You cannot choose anyone under the age of 18.
You can choose an inmate scheduled to be executed, but you only earn points if the person dies by some means other than the state-sponsored execution. For example, a shiv in the stomach counts, lethal injection does not.
  7. You are disqualified if you contribute in any way to the death of one of your chosen candidates. The one exception is if you are a police officer or member of the armed services and kill someone in the line of duty.
  8. All entries must be submitted on this thread no later than 23.59 EST on December 31st 2011. No entries will be accepted after this time. You may however make changes to your list up until this time, but only if someone pops their clogs before the beginning of the year or you've put someone in twice.

There are also a couple of extraneous categories:

This is now the 9th time we have done this, and each time someone questions the merits of what we are doing. Please bear in mind:

Have fun!

Edited to add:
The leaderboard is now up and running, and can be found here.

Here's my little list - and there's precious few of them that would be missed!

2. General Than Shwe, leader of the military government in Burma.

3. L K Advani - Indian politician and promoter of hatred and communal violence.

4. Thatcher, Margaret Hilda the truly appalling.

6. Jean Marie LePen, French politician and promoter of hatred and communal violence.

7. Robert Mugabe, the ruination of Zimbabwe.

8. Bal Thackeray - another promoter of hatred and communal violence in India, and admirer of Hitler.

9. Pat Robertson - alleged Christian.

10. Ian Paisley - another alleged Christian and promoter of hatred and communal violence in Ireland this time.

Right, I'm getting my list in early this year. Missing the deadline last time round resulted in three(!) of my regulars falling off the perch, and I'm not missing out again.

I'm majoring on ailing despots and ex-despots with a few random others thrown in for good measure.

1. Margaret Thatcher (if I take her off the list she'll die to spite me - pretty surprised she didn't keel over this year, TBH. Yes I do have her in the ailing ex-despots category [Two face] .)
2. Fidel Castro
3. Hosni Mubarak
4. Peter Stringfellow (long shot - but I personally have a theory that he's dead already and just hasn't stopped moving about)
5. Ronnie Biggs
6. Abdelbaset al Megrahi
7. Silvio Berlusconi
8. Paul Daniels (just because)
9. Billy Graham
10. Michael Douglas
11. King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia
12. Hugo Chavez
13. Ben Jonson (Olympic cheat and famous anabolic steroid abuser - bad for the heart)

If Wikipedia is to be believed, he will turn 18 on March 1, so maybe we can agree to a compromise: No points if he dies before March 1, 2012. Full points if he shuffles off his mortal coil on March 1 or thereafter.

Good to go!

Politicians whose time is up:
Margaret Thatcher
Gough Whitlam
Fidel Castro
Hosne Mubarak

Tottering princes:
Pope Benny
HRH Phillip

Celebs whose star is waning:
Hugh Hefner (surely all shagged out by now)
Snoop Dog (because no one called that can expect to live to an old age)

Sports stars:
Mohammed Ali
Alvaro Bautista (one of the unluckiest motorbike riders on the circuit)

I did briefly consider some older female hollywood celebs, but figured that much botox and silicon has to have a preservative value. Micky Rooney will be like George Burns - just laughing stops you dying, while Rupert Murdoch is just too plain pernickety to lie down and die yet.

I missed this last year and was annoyed all year long. Here are this year's soon-to-be lamented passings, in no particular order:

1. Zsa Zsa Gabor--although I've been saying that for about four years. Still, she's not getting any better.

2. Billy Graham.

I was enthralled by Bandstand in the very early 60s, as a preteen. But by 1966 or so it was definitely uncool in my peer group of 14-year-olds. I was amazed that it kept going into the 1980s.

The BBC seems to be a little vague as to his age (I think they said 77 or 78). IF, to be fair, let's assume he is the older of the two ages. I'd hate to cheat an extra point out of the game...

Greater than many realise. Spike Milligan gets all the credit for the Goons, and he certainly invented them, but many scripts were written by Milligan and Sykes while others by Sykes alone, while Milligan couldn't work. We'll probably never know the precise numbers unless Norma Farnes (their manager) spills the beans in an autobiography.

The composer Sir Richard Rodney Bennett has died; I would link to his obituary in the Telegraph if they'd let me into their website.

By sheer coincidence, we're singing one of his carols, Out of your sleep, at our carol service on Sunday.

RIP [Votive]

Would it be uncharitable for me to tell George HW Bush to hurry up?

I need some points this year!

Jane Dixon, suffragan bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, DC, from 1992 to 2002, has died.

Bishop Jane was the second woman to be consecrated a bishop in the Episcopal Church (after Barbara Harris, bishop of Massachusetts from 1989 to 2003) and the third in the Anglican Communion.

In 2001 Bishop Jane garnered attention when she refused to license the Revd Samuel Edwards as rector of a church in Maryland due to his stance against women priests and bishops and his views on homosexuality. During a visitation to Edwards' church she was barred entrance and had to celebrate the Eucharist outside the building, while Edwards held services inside. She eventually sued successfully in court to have Edwards removed from his post, but the suit was dropped after several appeals.

That's very young, especially for a sportsperson.

I worry for the year when the majority of people on this list die younger than me.

Jean Harris, secretary, mistress and murderer of Dr. Herman Tarnower, inventor of the Scarsdale Diet (he dedicated the book to her), will have only grapefruit and a tuna plate, thank you, at the heavenly banquet.

William Rees-Mogg has died. All I know about him is that he did not shy from the limelight.

We do seem to have had quite a haul at the tail end of the year.

Okay. After much waiting (sorry again) I have tallied the final scores. The link is here, and I guess everyone should check their scores over to make sure I haven't forgotten anything or made and arithmetical errors.

But based on those provisional results, the podium positions are as follows:
  1. Curiosity Killed... with 111 points.
  2. Gwai with 108 points.
  3. Mamacita with 105 points.
The Quantity Not Quality Award goes to Gwai who had four correct predictions. (That's very impressive!)

And finally, the Inside Track With The Grim Reaper award is shared between Amazing Grace, Cottontail, Curiosity Killed..., Eloise, Gwai, Light User, Mamacita, Niteowl2, and Timothy the Obscure for correctly predicting that Ella James would kick the bucket on January 20th.

So, thanks to all who took part, and fingers crossed the 2013 incarnation of this game will be just as fun.

IF, you have nothing for which you should apologise; if it weren't for the hard work you put in, the game wouldn't have existed at all. Have a nice rest, and good luck to The Rogue taking up the reins.
