His life changed the world.
His spirit will go on.
He belongs to the angels
In Africa he was the dawn.

Now his life begins in a far better place…….

Finally home with the angels who welcomed him with shouts of joy!
Back with the God who loves him so.

I think what I find so extraordinary is his capacity for forgiveness after all that he went through. I think that own refusal to live without rancour acted as a witness to others and helped to ensure that South Africa became a democratic state. On a personal level I find him a beacon and an inspiration for my own struggle to forgive hurts much less grievous than those he endured.

So mix'd in him that Nature might stand up

The personal stories of his interest in everyone he encountered are inspiring ~ such an amazing man.

He did many good things but he also foisted "one of the most liberal abortion laws in the world" (Guttmacher Institute) on his native country. An act that most black South Africans still oppose.

May God be merciful to him.

Now, finally, completely free. Special man, Nelson. We shall not see his like again.

“It is never my custom to use words lightly. If twenty-seven years in prison have done anything to us, it was to use the silence of solitude to make us understand how precious words are and how real speech is in its impact on the way people live and die.”

"Everything seems impossible until it is done." Nelson Mandela.

Thank you.

Hardly unexpected, but nonetheless a sad passing. He was one of those few people of truly global significance and impact. He has changed the world that we all live in.

I feel privileged to have been alive when he was, and to have lived in the same world as he did.

He did bestride the world as a colussus

and the elements in him were so mixed up that all the world might say 'This was a man'.

RIP Majiba

Pity that those who succeeded him were of so lesser stature. And the shameless posturing of Jacob Zuma beside an old man looking into the middle distance and unaware that he was being "used" is a disgrace.

South Africa is still a long way from realising his dream. But this One Man showed the way to its realisation.

And when the dream fails? You only have to look at Zimbabwe.

There's a Maaori proverb which I'd like to share:

"I te wao nui a Taane
ka hinga te totora whakahira"

"In the great forest of Taane (god of the forests)
a mighty totora (one of the tallest trees) has fallen"

[Votive] for him, his family and friends, and all affected.

Re forgiveness: The news coverage said that when he was stepping out the door of the prison, he realized that if he didn't forgive, they'd still have him.
