If it wasn't for That Place North of Hadrian's Wall we probably wouldn’t have:

Sean Connery, the haggis, Ham*** MacBeth, the Edinburgh Festival, David Tennant, butter****ch, ****ch tape, Sir Walter ****t, West Highland Terriers, Hadrian’s Wall, or this thread.

Let's celebrate the good things the country has to offer us. Points may be awarded, deducted, or not given at all.

Hmmm ... David ... er sorry ... [Hot and Hormonal] Doctor Who fans wouldn't have had 7 (McCoy), 10 (Tennant) or 12 (Capaldi). Unthinkable!

We wouldn't have Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter either!

For the purposes of this thread, * 'll overlook the fact that north of Hardrian's wall is sixty miles of the most beautiful county of ***land (so beautiful, in fact, that * believe God himself has a small retirement cottage there). And * 'll say Hurrah for ****t*** art, especially the ****t*** Colourists, and especially for Francis Cadell, one of my favourite painters.

[ETA: another H&A Day discovery - even URL links get their letters replaced by *s!]

Irn-Bru, Islay malt, and haggis. Proof that delicious, wonderful things can come from what seems at first disgusting.

<tangent> About ten miles or so of the Debateable Land in the other most beautiful county in E***land is also north of Hadrian's Wall. The Wall goes more or less straight across from coast to coast at the narrowest point; the modern border is north of it in Cumbria too. <\tangent>

* say hurrah for Mollie Hunter, ****land's answer to Rosemary Sutcliff.

And another hurrah for tablet. Tourists who don't know any better are fobbed off with vastly inferior ***l*** fudge; it took me a long time to find a shop that sold tablet last time * went to Edinburgh (the best stuff was at the newsagent's round the corner from my relative's house). Have the shopowners on the Royal Mile no respect for Tradition?

Possibly not. But they probably have a lot of respect for profits.

Oh wow, tablet! Instant diabetes but totally worth it!

Kenneth McKellar, Ivor Cutler. Really nice scones too.

Isn't this thread a bit like saying we don't have champagne because France isn't the same country as the one we're in?

Porridge.

Miffy, you've instantly acquired 5 minus points for mention of the dreaded P-word. It was a nice thread until you posted that.

* 'll throw some ****ch Pancakes at it in the hope of redressing some of the balance.

Drop scones, Ariel, drop scones!

What about some nice
potted heid then? *Horrible memories of being forced to eat this 'delicacy,' on childhood visits to the ****t*** branch of the family. * [Projectile]

* 'll see your David Tennant and raise you a James McAvoy (in fact there could be a whole separate thread of Hot!****t***!Actors!).

Also the works of the late Iain (M) Banks.

Sounds lovely, wouldn't have a problem with it myself.

Meanwhile, Ι'm adding the entire Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett.

* thought we were looking for GOOD things about ****land. [Big Grin]

My tuppence-worth: Orkney fudge, Highland Park whisky ... oh stuff it ... Orkney generally.

And Aberdeen butteries.

Can you tell we've just come back from a trip home? [Biased]

Thanks to that northern country of Great Britain for consecrating Samuel Seabury so that we have an American Episcopate.

Ah, butteries... Just a few weeks to go, then * 'll stagger off the plane in Glasgow and head straight to the train north for a gut full of butteries and Marmite (and some relatives).

Baptist Trainfan, on shopkeepers in the Royal Mile not selling tablet:
quote:
But they probably have a lot of respect for profits.
Any time someone makes tablet for our church fairs it sells out before anything else. That could be because there are a lot of people who know what it is in Yorkshire, but you can usually sell it to someone who doesn't by telling them it's better than fudge and/or offering them a free sample.

The real reason why they don't sell it is probably because it's harder to make than fudge. But that's no excuse.

* love this place of understated humour and grammar which differs in an entertaining way.

Catty***, glad to be in the North East.

Hurrah for Groundskeeper Willie, the funniest of all "The Simpsons" stereotypes. Long may his kilt fly up to a chorus of, "Ewwww's"

I started making tablet for our church sales a few years ago; it seems to go like hot cakes and now I've got to do it every bloody time ... [Roll Eyes]
