Here at the beginning of the New Year, now underway in the east, we bring our prayers before God.

Once again I begin with the prayer used last year:

My God, my Creator, my Redeemer, my Love
Spirit pervading all creation, of which I am a part
Spirit which moves within me and unites me to that whole
May we grow towards unity
May we help each other in our daily needs, earthly, spiritual and emotional
May I learn to have compassion for myself and others
May I be open to the promptings of the Spirit
So that we all may live in peace and love and rejoice in the glory of creation.
Let it be so.

For those who find the new year hard to face - God give you the strength to face it and to take each day as it comes.

For those afraid, alone, unhappy and/or with nobody to care for them, the lonely and the lost, may you find peace and comfort this night.

And for those who have to work, on hospital wards, or as police or security, or to take care of others, may you have a safe and peaceful night.

And for no terror attacks to disrupt the new year.

Please could you help me pray for my mum and dad? Dad is having tests at the moment for various ailments, he is sure that everything is Absolutely Fine and there is nothing wrong at all, whilst mum is convinced that every tiny symptom is a sign of Something Terrible and they're just counting down to an apocalyptic terminal diagnosis, and so is basically a tearful wreck. Both my sister and I live miles and miles away (my sister is in a different country, and we're an 8 hour drive away), so it's not even like we can pop in and give them a bit of light relief.

Can I ask you please for a prayer that Mili's kitten - missing since Christmas night might be found.
She was seen two nights ago, but a fruitless search last revealed no further sign of her. Mili is distraught she has had so many losses in her short life and this little cat means the world to her or I wouldn't ask. Thank you all.

I went to church this morning - and left after 20 minutes. Just felt completely disconnected from what was going on there. It's an ongoing problem that seems to be coming to a head again. Please pray that I can find a way to sort things out.

And I've got a hospital appointment next Saturday for a scan. another ongoing problem that seems to be getting worse. Feel scared. And lonely.

Our nearest river has burst its banks. Our village hall is being prepared in anticipation of possible evacuations overnight. The school in the next town along is likewise opening to take in people who are being flooded out of their homes.

Prayers please for R, my OH, who faces a colonoscopy tomorrow to see if there underlying reasons for her suddenly developing diverticulitis last September. We'd appreciate prayers for a good outcome, obviously, but also for her safety during the procedure. Her intestine is still inflamed, making the whole process more difficult, and potentially more dangerous. Thank you.

Can you find room in your prayer pile for our son P and his partner S who are expecting their first child any day. S is back in hospital (she has become prone to "stress-related" seizures especially in pregnancy). Tests currently show that the baby is on the small side, but OK.

Thank you for your prayers for R's colonoscopy today: I'm afraid the outcome was disappointing. She has a polyp too large to remove in today's procedure, diverticulitis (infection) is still evident, and the doctor was unable to safely complete the examination.

The next step is to return for a further colonoscopy under anaesthetic in a month: this will carry two levels of risk - the dangers to do with her intermittent heart problem, and the dangers of puncturing an inflamed colon. All being well the polyp (and any others found) will be removed and sent for examination to see if it is malignant. Then it seems likely that further surgery will be required to remove the damaged section of intestine.

Your continuing thoughts and prayers would be appreciated - thank you.

Photos here of this massive blaze in WA, now threatening other townships. The fire was started a few days ago by a lightning strike. As Rowen says, the township of Yarloop is pretty well wiped out.

Please pray for JAS and JG who are good friends of mine. JAS is in hospital to have a pin removed from his arm this week. He has, however, multiple medical problems and these make the procedure more complicated. My scan went well last week and I've been told that everything appears to be normal - so that's good. (it doesn't explain why I keep getting bouts of tummy pain but as they seem to have excluded anything nasty I suppose i can put up with that when it comes.)

Church not going so well. Still need to work out what to do about that Prayers appreciated.

For me: I'm in deep trouble on the bureaucratic stuff I've mentioned, despite people's efforts. I could be evicted and homeless in the next few weeks.

My mother had a fall in the hospital today and has fractured her arm and hip. Now waiting to hear whether she will need surgery on the hip. She is in pain but better that this happened at the hospital where people could immediately come to the rescue and know what to do, rather than when she was at home on her own and might not be discovered for a while.

Z had chest pains last week and had exploratory surgery at great expense which proved nothing. We pray that her doctor will fax her boss clearance to return to teaching, God willing.

She just got off the phone with a paramedic from the local fire station. He told her to get treatment right away if her chest pains continue! The cardiologist found nothing and we have flushed mass quantities of money down the toilet with nothing found wrong with her. Her pulse is v. low.

I can only hope that this is not the year we are both scheduled to die: her mom died of a heart attack at age 65 but my grand mother lived to see age 94 and her daughter, my aunt Rose, is going to be 93 this year. Aunt Rose has a stent. We thought Z would get one too!

Can I please ask for prayers again for my work situation? It is all very complicated and have big decision to make between less-than-good options. Have never been this stressed before (and not because I have had a quiet life so far!)

Rationally, I don't think God gets involved in our human decisions - he has given us the skills to make choices, after all.
But I wish I didn't feel so overwhelmed and lonely right now.

I forgot to mention that Herself had an operation yesterday - she is carrying twins and their placentas were a little small on the scans so they have done something to attach them more firmly to the uterine wall. She is still sore and groggy from the op but it appears to have been a complete success.

Please pray for my colleague S and her family. S's father is disabled by a stroke, and it sounds like he is nearing his end.

Please pray that he makes a good death. Since his stroke he has been frustrated and hard to live with. S also has a, shall we say, 'feisty' teenage daughter to care for. She has a lot on her plate.

Lord, help her to bear her burdens.

If this encourages you, I'm glad-- the day you posted this a red winged blackbird perched near the playground of my school and made a lovely racket for a good twenty minutes. It was unusual and delightful.

Prayers please for the boyfriend of one of my cousins. Apparently they were on a holiday, and he had to be flown to big hospital by air ambulance due to a severe heart attack; he is back in a hospital near home now.

I really hope they'll quit their (life-long) smoking habit. This is just so upsetting.

Update on J: the accident was much less critical than I had first heard--low speed, and J just smashed his face against the windshield, not through it. He stayed overnight and got an MRI, but otherwise came home with a set of impressive nose scratches and a great story to tell. Doctors say he will be fine.

My brother lives in Kaohsiung. He told us the quake was about 6.5. Lots of shaking there, but not much damage Tainan has some areas without power and quite a bit more damage, it's close to the epicentre. Hope your friend establishes contact and reports all well.

My wife R is having a risky investigation under anaesthetic tomorrow - there are dangers in the procedure they are planning, and she has heart issues anyway.

A bit late on this but a neighbour man has just had a malignant growth removed from his brain - the doctor said they caught it just in time as it was all set to cause hemiplegia type paralysis - he is not the sort of guy who would have coped well with paralysis. He still has a long way to go for his recovery, the operation was only on Saturday.

I haven't been around much lately because - of all things - I'm having extreme difficulty getting up at the right time in the morning and for the want of this nail, the shoe keeps getting lost.

I'm also slogging through a revision of a grant application that is taking FOREVER and on which my continued employment depends. Everything depends on this and it's been going on for so very very long that it's weighing heavily on my shoulders.

My wife R came safely through her colonoscopy this afternoon, and we are now home. The good news is that the polyp seen last time has been removed. The not so good news is that due to an underlying issue it is not going to be possible to complete the examination by colonoscopy. She has been referred for a special kind of scan which will be safe to attempt in about 6-8 weeks: the specialist believes this will give a clearer idea of her overall condition and treatment options.

My dad died today after a long decliine. I was with him just a few days ago for a visit, but he was beyond knowing anyone by then. We are all gathering at my brother's ranch anyway, where my father reposed, for my mom's 90th birthday, so we will add a funeral as well. It is no surprise to anyone. We all had plenty of warning. Please pray for the people of Christchurch. A 5.7 aftershock from the 2011 shake hit here today - followed by a swarm of smaller shocks. Some people are still sorting insurance from the 3 biggies in 2011, and now more of the same, unwelcome, but not unexpected.

There don't appear to be any bad physical injuries, but there will be psychological effects. (Like people signing their posts twice

Very sad about the little girl. According to reports, brown snake bites are not necessarily painful and may not even be noticed. By the time the venom had taken effect it was far too late for pressure bandages to work or even anti-venene.

Earlier this afternoon I drove past the aftermath of an accident. I didn't linger, and had to turn round and go a different route, but I did see that the ambulance had arrived, and there was somebody lying in the middle of the road, covered. I ask your prayers please for our neighbours, J and I, who are an elderly couple in their 80s. I bumped into I this evening as we arrived home at the same time, having not seen her for a while - she said that J is really ill, very weak; he was diagnosed with cancer in August and is now home and won't be going back to hospital. He had had tests recently to see if they could put a stent in his bile duct, but it sounds like his oesophagus is too swollen for them to get the scope down, and it sounds like it's just a case of keeping him as comfortable as possible.

Like many others above, I would appreciate prayers for my own job situation.

The bullying problem from some months ago has been solved by and large (many of my colleagues expressing incomprehension and anger at the bully now as well, and it's definitely not just me). It has got better and the boss will keep an eye on it. Thank you for your intercessions there and then, and your kind words. They have greatly helped!

Today, I'd like to ask for prayer regarding the number of hours I can work from summer. We have an annual reassessment, with everything depending on clients' demands. Although a basic time-frame and thus income seems safe, this is not sufficient for me. It would be helpful to have a similar commitment like this year, which has been a good one in terms of the amount of work, of time off and of pay. It definitely helps when you know most of the time how to pay your bills...!

Extremely anxious about finishing this thing. Worried about encroachment of worst enemy into my network (they get everywhere). Last night I dreamed a great white shark was trying to get into my open but locked window, and I was trying to be rational about the threat level because a) shark mouths aren’t really configured for getting inside ajar-but-open upper floor windows, and b) how long can it reasonably survive outside the water anyway? But, you know, I was still terrified. I feel somewhat the same way about finishing this thing, except that that’s much more of a rational fear.

Lord P is out in Texas and we were concerned when he facebooked that he had spent the evening in a&e. He later messaged me that he is ok, it was the daughter of the family who was in hospital. She has lots of health problems, particularly with pain, and one of her implants (to control pain) had come out. She will be having an operation tomorrow. Please pray for Isabel and her family.

My brother-in-law Peter was knocked off his bike by a truck and went over a cliff this morning. He is in a critical condition in hospital with lots of broken bones, including in his neck, collapsed lungs, and other injuries. Fortunately someone saw it happen and rang for an ambulance - not a certainty since they live in a rather isolated area. He was airlifted out and was in hospital before his wife knew.

For him and Rosie's sister Jan.

Had a horrible shock last night. My brother died suddenly yesterday morning. His wife went out to feed the chickens then when she came back in, K had collapsed on the kitchen floor. She tried CPR as did the paramedics, but to no avail. It looks like a massive heart attack and there were no signs of distress, but there will have to be a post-mortem.

He was 73 and while he had Parkinson's all that had done was to make him frustrated at not being able to do electrical work.

Can you offer a prayer for K, his widow R (who lost her father only eighteen months ago) their daughters M & H, his grandson R and the girls partners M & D.

The worst aspect I can think of is that his grandchildren will never know him (two more are on the way). He was a lovely man, and we'll all miss him terribly.

I have found out that my S was not kicked out by his wife, however he is in the hospital in very poor shape. He may have had a stroke, they aren't sure, and he's been diagnosed with COPD. That's on top of the damaged liver and alcoholic dementia. Please pray for him and his wife B.

A couple of weeks ago I requested prayer for J, my elderly neighbour, who has cancer and is basically now at home waiting for the end. I saw his son today and asked after J, apparently up until very recently he wasn't in any pain, but the pain has now hit in the last couple of days, and nurses are visiting regularly to administer morphine. So please do keep him in your prayers, along with his wife and all their (very close) family. Thank you

I have a friend who is concerned that there is something demonic affecting his life, through a relation.

I have problems with a belief in demons, and am more likely to attribute his situation to someone's selfcentredness.

I also have problems with intercessory prayer, which he feels may be the solution, as it has not, in my experience, resolved anything I have prayed about for others*. To the extent that I am reluctant to pray for others in case it has a negative effect.

Which is why I don't come here very much.

But support for my friend other than what I can physically offer would be welcomed. He does seem to be strengthened in his ability to cope, at any rate. As do I. But he has a tremendous burden, which would be lessened if the other party could somehow be supported to find non-manipulative ways of relating to others.

*These prayers have not been the prescriptive sort of shopping list prayers I have sometimes read about being answered. I don't assume I know the best way of dealing with problems.

An update on my S. He's still in the hospital, on IV antibiotics for a blood infection. His legs won't hold him so he is bedridden. One of his arms isn't working either. He is lucid sometimes and not others. B, his wife, is trying to figure out the financial situation, which is not good at all. Please pray for both of them.

He is in a good care community but his case will need to be approved by a government departmental committee before he can be approved for the appropriate level of care as he is under 65 ( only by 4 months, which seems like nitpicking to me).

I have posted before about my nephew F and his severe asthma. Last year he spent about 3 months in total in hospital and he has been in and out of hospital all this year. My brother's family lives on the coast and he has been going to a hospital there, but now is being moved to the Royal Children's in Melbourne as doctors hope they can find a treatment that can control his asthma better so he isn't always in hospital or having life threatening attacks. Obviously it has been a really stressful time for us all, especially my brother, sister-in-law and nephew's siblings. The whole family will be staying in Melbourne while he is in hospital here.

Please pray that an effective treatment is found and for strength and encouragement for the family.

An update on my nephew. His asthma improved in Melbourne and the Royal Children's decided not to do a lung scope as it is an invasive procedure and also would have had to be done under general anaesthetic as my nephew would not allow a tube up his nose while conscious. They decided he was well enough to go home, but have said to bring him back if his asthma worsens again within the next month.

I saw the whole family last night before they headed home and nephew seemed pretty good. He had one asthma attack, but not a severe one and was ok after using his ventolin. I'd love to think this means he will have a while out of hospital, but given how often he has had severe asthma I know this is unlikely.

It's frustrating that the trip to Melbourne hasn't provided any answers or solutions.

B is only in his early sixties but already has been diagnosed with dementia; it now transpires that he also has myeloma, and if that wasn't enough, a UT infection.

His family are distraught - he is a lovely chap - but I can't see a happy ending for B, whichever way it goes. Lord have mercy

Herself and Himself have gone off to the hospital this morning for her regular scan and check up so praying that all is okay at 5 months. It was her birthday last week, she is now 40 and we know that this is her last chance and that they won't try again if something does go wrong.

So, I really want to stay in my current job and am very slowly writing the thing that may enable that. But it’s really too late now to achieve that without a gap in employment, even if it succeeds (the chances are slim, but no slimmer than anyone else’s; I could succeed).

Besides that there are two other prospects, both of which would remove my ability to support myself financially into the future. So you see, none of it is good. Except that both could be stellar opportunities and I’m just too myopic to see it. I mean, if I win them, which I may not.

And also for me to get on top of things in general. I’m not too proud of myself lately.

And, please, find me another soul to stand with.

A stupid little thing in the scheme of things, but I have a job interview in a couple of weeks and need to bring with me various certificates of my qualifications. You know what I'm going to say - I can't find them *anywhere*. This is a long one...

WIll need a LOT of prayer suppor as I continue to heal..

I recently posted this on Reddit when asked to explain how i processed 2nd wave radfem rhetoric...

The experience is my own.

I was one of the first ever people to receive an Asperger diagnosis in 1987, personally diagnosed by Lorna Wing in 1987, 2 years after she translated Hans Asperger's papers. Consequently I was very literal in my interpretation of inbound signals.

This also led to me running a minus-5-year Delta in sociosezual development.

I experienced low level Sexual abuse by predatory girls at age 13, sociosexual dev was approx 8. They silenced me by threatening to cry rape if I talked. I was also victim blamed by my female militant Feminist tutor-group tutor. I also had the deafeningly loud message from Dworkin feminists from news reports concurrent in 1984. Namely that somehow I was a "rapist" because I had a penis or something. (The tutor-group is your base class in the British secondary school system of the time. American equiv would be homeroom).

I started suicidally eating.

Scott Aaronson's experience is also relevant, as I heard the same toxic mix of conservative American Christian messages and the deafening slander by Team Dworkin. As a Brit, this was very confusing, as the UK is apparently "gender egalitarian", according to voices i hear from the government... or something.

Michael Kimmell, being downstream of Dworkin/Mackinnon, is also toxic to autistic men. I also went onto internalise the the Eunuch/Rapist dichotomy described in Thing of Things . Also is Hugh Ristik's When you have Feminist guilt you don't need Catholic guilt . I'm Baptist.

Mary Koss's action in creating the made to penetrate category in 1984 erased me, until 2004, when I was told by a counsellor that my abuse was not my fault. Kimmell woudl have me view my rape (by Feminism's own rules) as my fault because I was guilty of the crime of penis possession or something.

Somehow Kimmell would hold me guilty for my own abuse as "men cannot be raped, it's unwanted contact" according to Koss and somehow I was too "privileged" to be raped or something. I was brought off against my will.

Somehow Steinem Feminist rhetoric makes me a subhuman rapemonster worthy of death or something... Why?

Kidscape and Erin Pizzey report how the loud militant TERFy faction in Feminism sent death threats re the acknowledgement of male victims of dv and rape. Warren Farrell and Karen DeCrow were working towards reworking consent in the 1970s. Greer et al stood in the way of this. Greer goes further. She is on record as saying that as a victim of female perp rape, I should be incarcerated as a threat. FOR WHAT?!

Add how I used my own experience to describe how a predatory woman could use Valenti/Friedman Yes Means Yes rules to frame a man for his own rape at her hands. This comment in Valenti's ymy Guardian piece was upvoted 50 times in 90 minutes.. Then frantically deleted and I was put on premod.
Is someone trying to hide something?
And my main reaction to the activist side was also led by...

And being the literal penguin I am - just going back... the "KILLALLMEN" from a Government minister had me in panic as I was terrified that I would be eventually forced to my knees, feel the muzzle of an SA80 rifle against the back of my skull - and my brains would be blown out by a female British Army soldier summarily for the crime of being born male.

Prayer much appreciated for W. A lovely guy, he moved here from Scotland to marry my ex's cousin. Second marriage as his first wife died. New family, now young adults.

He is now in palliative care after treatment for recurrence of brain tumour did not work..

May these days be peaceful fo him and A and their daughters and for his adult children from first marriage.

Have had a bad couple of days-- got out of town on Saturday, and the distance from the usual crap at home seemed to unleash something in me-- a memory about me and my sister set off a crying jag that lasted most of the day. Sunday wasn't much better.

I've mentioned on another thread the anger and retaliation I get from my mom when she catches me being visibly sad in front of her, and if you're wondering if the seriousness of the situation has softened her at all-- that would be a "no." My job is to provide attention, validation, and accomodation to everyone else, and God help me if I can't provide it.

Do not use this thread to discuss feminism. No comments about the proportion of feminists are "anti-men", how loud their voice seems to you, or anything else.

I'll also repeat what you have been told before. These are public discussion boards, and as such they are a highly inappropriate place to discuss what are clearly very personal and painful issues. You have previously stated that you are seeking help elsewhere, that will be far better for you than any discussion on the Ship of Fools. I'm sure everyone here will join me in praying that this is helping you.

Slightly delayed due to the time it's taken me to process this, but then what is time to God...

Can I ask prayers for the soul of Ted Harris, who died of injuries sustained in a car crash last week. I didn't know him at all, but my wife and I were among the first on the scene (having coincidentally been driving the other way on the road at the time) and provided emergency first aid until the paramedics arrived. Really sad - though not 100% surprised given his injuries - that he didn't make it

I have just received messages from two friends who know the power of Shipmates prayers.

Would you please keep baby Ella in your prayers. She is (IIRC) four months old and has liver failure. She is being rushed to Miami for a procedure which will hopefully keep her alive.

Also, Kim, the new daughter-in-law of another friend, is in the hospital with heart failure. She has had heart problems for most of her life, and only recently felt well enough to marry.

For my mum please .

She has had had some scary health test results, needs to wait until Tue to see a specialist and is understandably v anxious.

I live / work in another country and am really worried too (although I try not to show this to her, of course) and concerned about the potential consequences.

Feel like this now - not good at feeling helpless and scared.

I ask your prayers for a teenaged girl at my church, L, who was planning on harming herself, but thank God, told a friend. She is now out of a week's hospitalization and on an out-patient program. She's doing well, but I'm still shaken by what a close call it was for this lovely, gifted girl with a great big heart. Prayers please for L's continued recovery, but also for all who find themselves in despair.

I would again be grateful for prayers for the boyfriend/manfriend/partner of one of my cousins. I had asked for prayers for them only a few months back, at the end of January, when he had a heart attack. He seemed to have overcome this amazingly quickly, but today needs being checked for a tumor of some sort or other.

Thank you for thinking of my cousin and her partner. This must be extremely worrying for them, and we hope and pray for a good outcome.

Please pray for C , who, as a freelancer, works really hard. He doesn't have the best work/life balance, and this affects his relationships.

He clearly would love to be with someone, but he needs to work on what feeds his heart, what frees him, and what is a prop to ego.

And looks like the company I moved to only a couple of months ago might go balls up...I don't want to whine but this a v scary prospect...being unemployed would be bad financially of course but even more damaging for my mental health.

Heavy duty, super-reinforced prayers needed for my foster-sister K. She had surgery 2 weeks ago to remove a seemingly-benign tumor on her adrenal gland. The pathology department didn't like the look of it and sent it across town to the World Famous Medical School, and they've determined that her breast cancer of 6 years ago has metastasized.
I'm taking her for a PET scan on Friday. It doesn't sound good.
My sister has been here for the past three weeks, but had to return home yesterday. K. has almost no one to help out. I'll be there tomorrow, too.
My heart is breaking.

More news from my S. He's still unable to walk and has problems with his shoulders and arms. He's lost weight to about 140 lbs, this for a man 6'3". And he has a pressure sore on the base of his spine that's being slow to heal. His mental condition isn't too great either. Please pray for him and his wife B and family.

Thanks be to God, disabled teenager K's back operation went well. She is likely to make a good recovery, and will not be too restricted in her movements.

Meanwhile, please pray that next week's threatened strike action by junior doctors in the UK will not result in my brain tumour operation being postponed yet again........

Praying for everyone on this thread.

Also, I have spent 2016 watching everyone be shocked that 2016 seems to be the leading cause of death to anyone of outstanding talent in our culture. But I just came on here to pray and now I find out about Victoria Wood and I'm incredibly shaken.

Anyway... I really need to finish the thing tomorrow. Every time I sit down to do it something happens. Really, no joking. Tomorrow. If I don't finish it I'm going to look stupid.

My friend J found out today that there is a suspicious spot in one of her lungs. She was treated for lung cancer six years ago in the other lung, and had been considered in remission for almost a year. Now this. Please pray.

Please pray for a friend who has severe hip pain. She's been on morphine and her hubby has to keep working yet keep taking her to doctor appointments too. She's been crying in pain. They planned on traveling next month. I am hoping this can be resolved. All medically that can be done, is being done for her. But she needs the prayers.

I'm still trying to work out what to do about my church situation. Please pray - I'm not quite sure what for - just that somehow things will start to feel better?

I haven't been to my own church much this year; I've been to about six others, some quite ok, some not - but it's more because I wanted to do something on Sunday mornings rather than actively looking for a new church to go to.

I went back to my church this Sunday and both clergy said it was nice to see me. I don't suppose anyone else noticed I hadn't been around much. I've told them I don't feel I fit in there any more and I feel lonely there. They're sympathetic but they haven't got any answers. Maybe there aren't any. Maybe I'm expecting too much.

I let a stupid situation get to me today and really let rip at someone. It was their fault, but I wish I'd just let it pass. I'm out of strength to cope with this stuff at the moment, right at a time when every area of my life needs me to do more and do it better. Would appreciate prayers please.

Please pray for my friend J. Her husband has advanced dementia and is aggressive with it and she is having to think about putting him in a care home. They have been married for over 50 years and this is very hard for her, but she is under severe stress.
