As a consequence of a different conversation (of which more later....), I do believe that we may have persuaded a certain heavenly body to leave her Alaskan hideaway and visit London.

There are five possible dates free in her hectic schedule for a mega-London-meet and I am posting here to see which dates are convenient for the largest number of Shipmates. It's a chance in a lifetime to see the Comet - let's see if we can show her what a full-sized shipmeet is really like!

So here are the options:
Weekend of.... 8th October
15th October
Around Christmas
New Years' weekend
7th January

So, London shipmates and those who would be willing to travel for this astronomical delight... when would work best for you?

Sadly I am allergic to the British Winter so will be unable to attend.

Keep me updated.

Would love the opportunity to meet Comet, and would travel to London by train so would rather avoid Christmas and New Year when many trains have a rest.
Will keep an eye on this thread.

I would love to meet Comet and Emma-Louise I have no idea whether getting out of the house would be possible, but if I can, I will try.

Will keep watching.

(And yes, I know that Comet can make it from Alaska, I should be able to make it 30 miles into London. But I will have to see.)

Posted by Curiosity killed ... (# 11770) on :

Ooh yes. I've told my offspring that if it's Christmas I'm staying in London instead of going away with her.

Posted by Japes (# 5358) on :

Christmas/New Year would be difficult, but I'll watch and see. I'd love the opportunity for a mega-meet including Comet!

Posted by Ferijen (# 4719) on :

For Comet, I would head to London [Smile]

Posted by M. (# 3291) on :

We would be in, depending on date of course.

I'd love to meet Comet too, but Christmas/New Year is likely to be taken up with family stuff.

Holiday travel is also wicked expensive, but I wanted to put the option out there.

Glad to see that you are mellowing ....not.

The Christmas/New Year dates are a complete bust, for family reasons, but I'm checking and might be able to do one of the October dates.

If I can get, be prepared for a shock, Comet. The SoF photo of me (in James Bond mode) needs updating, to something more like this. But if I can get, I'll see if I can get the beard trimmed first.

October might be the best bet, if only for reasons of weather (Come on, Comet, you must be aware that the UK grinds to a halt in 2cm of snow.) [Snigger]

Oooh! [Cool]
I'm flexible for dates, atm

Posted by Smudgie (# 2716) on :

After further intensive research, I think we might be looking at the October weekends.
Get them in your diaries now, and we'll start to look at plans in earnest once Comet has made some definite decisions about travel plans.

Weasel......... Autumn in the UK is pure delight.... and when else would you get the opportunity to see both me and Comet simultaneously? What on earth could better that?

Just because comet might want to go too, 15 October is last night of The Merchant of Venice with Jonathan Pryce as Shylock at The Globe. (I have a £5 standing ticket which can be changed)

I'll be Comet watching for the date - Oct should be fine for me.

Posted by TonyK (# 35) on :

Based on current diary I could do 8th October or 7th January - though the latter is a tad weather-dependant! 15th October requires letting down some others, while Christmas/New Year might be difficult from a family point of view, subject to arrangements not yet arranged!!!

For Comet I'll gladly travel from the depths of Gloucestershire!!

And, autumn has it's own delights to stop the country in it's tracks. Falling leaves!

The weekend of 8 October is not possible for us (at a pinch, doable for me but out for Macarius). 15 October is good for us.

15th is also good for us to venture out of deepest Wales. You will ask them to turn down the bright lights and noise of the big city for us, won't you?

I'd also prefer to avoid Christmas period as trains get much pricier.

Well I've never been to a Ship meet as I only came aboard whilst resident in Kenya. However having now returned to Blighty if the date were to be 15th October I would do my very best to get there, subject to "leaves on the line".....

I would definitely leave the centre of the known universe to meet Comet- and other shipmates of course! Only met the east anglian contingent so far....

We've been talking about taking our kids to London for half term, which for us is 14-24th. So the 15th might just fit.

I could never forget you, pissy darling. But I can only afford one adventure at a time. You're next.

And hey, who came to North America recently but neglected to swing by? Hmm?

Yeah. Dude. Apparently one has to be a saint with three heads, walrus tusks, and magic powers to get a visa to your fair country. Either that or they have something against Alaskans.

Posted by comet (# 10353) on :

Final travel days are not yet settled (airplane reservations require you have money. What's with THAT?!?) but the goal is to possibly be in town for both weekends, and spending the week visiting some friends as well as exploring and getting lost and probably getting mugged and looking like a total dorky tourist. I promise to let you all know final details, but for now we can think towards some sort of axe murderer gathering both the weekends of the 8th and the 15?

Posted by jacobsen (# 14998) on :

The plot thickens. Don't have an axe. Will a mallet do?

That's odd. I just show up with a completed application form and a new picture, pay in my money, give them my passport and about 10 days later, I'm good to go. (Of course, they might make it difficult for you, because Amerkans make it difficult for Indian tourists. On the other hand maybe they just don't like you.)

Posted by comet (# 10353) on :

It was a complicated issue because I was to be chaperoning a bunch of teens to a conference. Tourist visas: denied. Educational visas: only to attend an education institution. Business visas: not allowed for under 18s. The adults from the US attending the conference got in fine with business visas.

Also we were supposed to bring one legal guardian per kid. Which we did eventually set up, at all of us parents' personal expense. But it wasn't meant to be.

Will keep an eye on this but 8th Oct is best for Balaam and me as our son is getting married on the . 15th Oct.

I have always neglected to bring my axe to a shipmeet. So I'm only halfway to being an axe murderer.

As LRP said, the 8th if you'll let an axe non-murderer in.

Posted by Smudgie (# 2716) on :

Nothing specific until Comet is able to book her flights. We have talked about a shipmeet on the Sunday of the first weekend and the Saturday of the second, but it depends on when she is able to get plane tickets at a reasonable cost.

Posted by Smudgie (# 2716) on :

ALAS ! The sad news is that Comet has, due to unforeseen circumstances, had to cancel her trip to the UK>
We're hoping to re-schedule for Spring.
That's not to say that we couldn't get together for a shipmeet in her absence and raise a glass in her honour, of course.

[Frown] [Frown] It does at least make the fact that that weekend appears to be when we next need to go and visit Sandemaniac's parents more copable with.

Here's hoping that spring re-scheduling works (and with a date I'm not already double-booked on!)
