Our dear friend, Uncle Pete, passed away peacefully in hospital this afternoon in the arms of members of his family.

I will miss this determinedly independent man who first visited several years ago and has been a firm friend both online and in real life.

Thank you, Smudgie, for all your care for Pete.

I spent a day with Pete IRL. Picked him up after church, and thereafter spent the day driving him around and playing impromptu tour guide, at his request. This was somewhat challenging because, in addition to using a wheelchair, he was deaf as a post and required MUCH SHOUTING for communication. He was also an intelligent, charming, sharp, sympathetic, and funny companion, and an intrepid traveller. I liked him and I'm glad I got to meet him.

Sending my condolences and love to Wodders & HWMBO, and to Pete's family.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

The last time I saw him was the first time we'd met - at Woderick's place in Kerala in 2011. I was down from Bengaluru for the weekend - Palm Sunday if memory serves. We bundled ourselves into the jeep and went to a Catholic church nearby for the service - the chair was no barrier to getting around. Bless his memory and comfort to those who grieve.

Another here who didn't know him in Real Life, but always appreciated his posts here and on Facebook. I always admired his bravery and determination, in travelling half-way round the world each year to spend his winters in India.

When he retired as an All Saints hosts, I felt more honoured than I can tell you when I was asked to be his replacement - great metaphorical shoes to be filled by this little piglet.

Holding his soul and his family and friends, especially WW, Himself, Herself and the twins, in my prayers.

Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him.

I've been sitting thinking about Uncle Pete a lot over the last hour or so. I really barely knew him - I met him a couple of times in real life, and interacted a little on the ship (not much in recent years where I've been much less active).

And yet.

He's always been one of those people who glues this community together. I've always been aware of him as a presence in the ship community; a real friend to all of us here, especially those in need of a friend. Even at some remove, I could see what a difference Pete made to the lives of people I know and love, and I can only begin to imagine the positive effect that he's had on the lives of so many others.

God grant us all the spirit, the courage, and the warm-heartedness to be anything like Pete. [Votive]

We also met Pete in Edinburgh, a good few hours touring the National Museum. I spent most of my time trying to keep up with children, so I didn't have much time to chat to Pete who followed on behind with Flausa. I think it must have been immediately before the meet when others met him in Edinburgh, probably we couldn't make that because we'd have needed to get home to put the children to bed.

A great man, who will be missed by all who knew him.

I was sorry to learn of this, and I knew that he was unhappy with the institutions of his youth in his last years. My last memory of him was perhaps in the happiest of his settings, at tea with a few friends, enjoying scones warm from (my) oven, and like any good socialist, speaking in praise of the Queen Mother.

Pete's family have sent me the link to his obituary, should anyone wish to read it.

Pete's obituary

Lothlorian aptly pre-empted one of the charities which donations can be given to in memory of Uncle Pete as he was an avid Scouter. The obituary mentions two other charities too, should anyone wish to give in his memory.

You will also see that they are going to hold a celebration of his life in the springtime. I think he'd like that. I will keep people posted once I know the precise details, just in case anyone were close enough to go along to represent the Ship.

(Wish it were going to be me but if I could have managed a trip to Canada, I'd have done it while he was still around to visit there).

Posted by Smudgie (# 2716) on :

Thunderbunk, it seems wrong to say it but it has been nice to have a reason to ring WW a few times recently and see how he is getting on. He is undergoing treatment for his eyesight which is a longhaul treatment so he is deferring judgement on how effective it might be. He is finding it quite tiring - even though it involves lying still for an hour at a time.
Other than that, he seems fine and pretty happy, apart from the inevitable frustration of blindness and being totally reliant on others.

Pete's PM was to notify me that I had now lost my "fluffy bunny" status, (and to compliment me on the aptness of said comment).
