My friends, who have a place near Lydney, are, most kindly, giving me shelter over the Bank Holiday Weekend 5th, 6th & 7th of May - how about a gathering at Taurus Crafts on the Sunday [6th] or Monday [7th]? There may be others amongst my party as I will need to con my friends into giving me a lift down there but as all of them love Taurus it shouldn't be too hard to convince them. There could be up to 6 of them!

Which day and which time?

I favour the Monday a bit but am open to being convinced otherwise.

Oh dear. Not only can I not do the 5th because of a wedding, but I also don't get the Bank Holiday on the 7th. And I'm guessing Sunday will not suit the majority. [Frown]

Sorry if it spoils your hopes, Qlib, but Monday would be a better day for us, though Sunday is possible.

In fairness, either day is OK - as far as I know at the moment, I will not be expected to be doing anything on the Sunday and I can take steps to ensure that it stays that way - so we will cheerfully go with the majority on this one.

Taurus is about an hour from here, so we can fit around most timetables.

Thinking about it Sunday is probably as good for me as there would not then be a panic about getting back to Bristol on time for my bus - and my hosts there would be happy either way.

That Sunday is my only free one between now and then, so it seems meant.
On the other hand, I am free on the Saturday too, so I can go with the majority.

I don't think I can manage Saturday as that is the day we will be moving over to The Forest and we may not be up terribly early. It looks like Sunday is the day - if nobody objects in the next 24 hours I'll change the thread title to reflect that.

If it is the Sunday, as I said, we (St Gwladys and self) can make it, but not before about 13:00. Whilst I can make sure that I don't get any bookings at home for that day, the morning in Oakdale was arranged 12 months ago - a bit set in stone, as you might say. The proposal at the moment is that St G will come with me to that, and then we will head straight to Taurus as soon as the service is over.

Okay, 24 hours are up and I have changed the title to reflect that we will meet on the Sunday. The venue will be Taurus Crafts, just to the west of Lydney, to the west of the roundabout where the bypass takes off and on the north side of the road.

Knowing that some will arrive a little late can I suggest 12.30 as the time I will be there from - terrible sentence construction there! I'll be the tall-ish, elderly, slim, debonair, Quakerly, good-looking one - possibly wearing a silly hat.

Elderly for certain!

Not sure if I'll make this. Sundays are work days so it'll depend on the rota and public transport from Bristol to Lydney which probably isn't great on a Sunday! Will let people know nearer the time!

Lord Pontivillian is likely to be home for that Bank Holiday weekend, so he's likely to be there after all! Darllenwr is preaching in another church that morning, and there would be ructions if the congregation at our church found out Lord P had been home and they hadn't seen him, so he'll probably travel up seperately. He's likely to get there before us.

Unfortunately (speaking as a reasonably frequent visitor to Taurus) there is not a great deal of under-cover space there and most of what there is is devoted to retail. The cafe is reasonably large and has an annex wherein most of us could probably stay without upsetting too many people.

On the other hand, the forecast for Sunday isn't looking quite so dispiriting now - most likely dry (if overcast), albeit cold but without too strong a wind - should be OK if we wrap up.

As an aside, Marvin, I take it you are aware that the Dean Forest railway is less than 2 miles down the road from Taurus Crafts? [Big Grin]

Just popping in to say I haven't forgotten about this! There is a Lot Going On in the birdie household at the moment, and this weekend is the first for what feels like ages that we are all at home together.

I don't think we'll know till Sunday morning whether a trip to Taurus will feel like a nice day out, or just another Thing To Do, so we'll be making a decision on the day. If we do turn up, we will sort ourselves out with cafe space etc. If we're not going to turn up, I'll let you all know via Pants!

Thank you all for a really good Ship Meet. It was lovely to catch up on old friends and meet new ones.

Rather oddly, having talked of my previous incarnation in Child Protection, I arrived home to find I had been phoned by one of my ex clients.

She was born to an alchoholic mother who was so far gone in drink that she did not know she was pregnant, and refused to believe she had given birth. An order was granted, but the court insisted she be given the chance and support in caring for her child. Within days, as I made my routine visit, her partner told me she was drunk and had locked herself and the child in the bedroom.

Through the keyhole, I saw her try to ram a feeding bottle into the childs ear, and shouting at the child for not taking the feed. Fortunately Mr Weeder was with me-he was also a CP worker- and he kicked the door down so that I could retrieve the child.
After a number of attempts at returning the child to her mothers care, ordered by the courts (mother scrubbed uo well and had middle class parents who would speak for her in court, but offered no actual help or support) the courts finally decided the child should be placed for adoption.
Entirely coincidentially, the adoptive family and Mr W and I moved into the same village so I watched her grow up. I was even a Governer at her primary school.

She is amazing. She and her partner live independently, they have an active social life, she works in a company that employs people with difficulties.

She had phoned because her natural mother, with whom she is in contact, had phoned in a drunken rage, and made all sorts of complaints and threats.She has never allowed her natural mother to know her address, and will 'block' her natural mothers number if it happens again.

She had dealt with the call, and simply wanted my assurence that she had done the right thing.

An odd coincidence that this should happen while I was talking about my work.

As usual, a very jolly time - I haven't yet met a shipmate I haven't liked. Thanks to Weeder for organising the table, and to the staff at Taurus who put up with us completely reorganising the furniture when more people turned up! hosts at one meet - is this a record?

A very pleasant afternoon - all credit to Pants, Alien is becoming a very organised young lady. I cannot think of many children of her age who would have fished out notebook and pencil and systematically gone around the table getting everybody's orders for food and for drinks - very impressed.

I know that Mamacita, Hart, and I were all at one meet, but I think it might have been a few weeks after Hart stepped down. (Feel free to correct me, if you know!) So I'm not sure whether that counts.

I bet they've beat all records at the Santa Fe meets, but cannot confirm that.

) several hosts at various times but I am uncertain how many were all there simultaneously and during their hostly tenure. Goodness - three years since the last wightmeet!

Today, the local paper reported that the Sow has been found slaughtered, with one of her hind legs cut off. I presume the people who killed her were disturbed before they could cut up and remove the rest of the carcass. The little ones are in danger of starvation, as they are too young to fend for themselves.
People are a menace.
